5/8 Update:

Dad/Doug developed a blood clot in his right leg. He also had a couple small ones they weren’t too concerned with in his pulmonary veins.

They performed surgery this morning and placed an IVC filter in his right leg to prevent that one from entering his pulmonary artery/veins. At this time they cannot do the anticoagulants (blood thinners) with the risk of a brain bleed. So at this time the filter was the best option.

He had a swallow test today and he unfortunately failed that. They will try again in a few days. This will be the first step to put in the Passy valve so he can speak. With the stroke he had it takes longer to get to get the nerves to react.

5/5 Update:

Some great news about Dad’s (Doug) recovery. He has been making incredible strides lately! He is regaining significant movement on his left side and even some on his right leg. The physical therapy team is working with him every other day to help him sit up and build strength.
One of the biggest wins is that he is off the ventilator and breathing on his own. We also got him a keyboard, which has been a game-changer; he’s been able to type out sentences to communicate with us. It’s also been helpful for coordination, though he does get tired after a while.
With all the progress, he’s been moved out of critical care on the 8th floor and into the step-down ICU. It’s definitely a huge step in the right direction!

4/24/-4/27 Updates

Sorry it’s been a roller coaster ride the last few days…

Friday he had gotten weak breathing on his own. He was still having a lot of secretion and blood from his trach. Ended up going back on the vent overnight.

Saturday he was very tired and worn out. He slept most all day and was very unresponsive to the nurses.

Sunday we had a great day! He was more alert than ever moving his left arm more and rotating his left foot in circles. Vent was on minimum settings all day.

Today: he has spiked a temp of 101.5 and very worn out again. He most definitely has an infection in his lungs that we are hoping they get under control asap. He was able to elevate his left arm and is wiggling his right toes. He is fighting with everything he has. We appreciate all the support, thoughts and prayers during this time.

Golf terms it’s like making that eagle then a double bogey on the next hole…

4/23 Dad/Doug UPDATE:

***Dad gave Kyler a couple smiles when he came into the room to see him today!! It was so awesome to see him smile!!***

They are continuing to wean him off the ventilator, and he’s doing great. His trach looks really good, and he’s tolerating it well.

Respiratory therapy came in and lowered his oxygen, and he’s tolerating that well too. They will continue lowering it throughout the day, but he will go back on the ventilator tonight. In the morning, they’ll take him off again and repeat the process, with the goal of hopefully keeping him off the vent tomorrow night. They described it as “waking up and exercising the lungs.”

They are starting to feed him today through the PEG tube.

As long as he continues progressing, they plan to move him out of ICU and down to the 7th floor. The 7th floor is a step-down unit from ICU, still very hands-on, and they can put him back on the vent there if needed since respiratory therapy is also on that floor. The 7th floor is also where all of his therapy would begin. He could potentially be there for months depending on his progress. After that, they will also be looking into Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation as a possible next step, depending on insurance and other factors. The social worker is already working on that.

They started him back on his AFib medication, and he is tolerating it well. They had to give it a little early this morning, so they may increase one of the doses. The doctor said as long as his heart rate stays under 120, he’s doing great. They do not want to lower it too quickly because that can put more stress on his heart.

He also opened his eyes for the doctor, wiggled his toes, and moved his tongue when asked.

Speech therapy came in as well and placed a speaking valve. He was able to push air through and make a noise, which they said is a great sign. That was all they did for speech therapy today because he has a lot of secretions in his throat right now, but they said they’ll be back in a couple of days to continue working with him.

Dad got out of surgery about an hour ago from his Trach and PEG Tube. Surgery was pushed from yesterday to this morning to finally this afternoon. He is still out of it right now. We are meeting with the cardiologist for his AFIB issues.

4/19 Update:

Not much to update today. He’s been asleep for most part of the day. They have started pain meds which has made him a little groggy. Blood pressure and heart rate have improved some. Doctor said this morning’s CT was the same and no reason for surgery at this time.

***HUGE UPDATE***

He has made incredible progress this evening! We saw some major breakthroughs in his recovery:
• Motor Control: He was able to wiggle his left toes and rotate his left hand (trying to get to wiggle fingers, but will call it a win) on command.
• Communication: He followed directions to nod and shake his head ‘no’ or 'yes.'
• Eye Movement: He displayed great control by closing, holding, and opening his eyes on command. Even better, he was able to track to the left—a huge step, as his movement was previously limited to the right and center."

We have a long road to recovery but the most minor improvements is a win for us!! Thank you all your thoughts and prayer, but please keep them coming!!

4/18 Doctor Update:

The CT scan is currently stable (not worse). His responsiveness fluctuates, he is having moments of alertness and recognition, but also periods of lower responsiveness. She mentioned that the ICU environment can be disorienting, which may be contributing to his sleep/wake confusion. He is doing well on the ventilator. The current strategy is to support him with minimal settings as he gains strength. The team is monitoring how he handles the "spontaneous mode" to assess his ability to eventually breathe without the tube.

Another CT scan is scheduled for tomorrow morning to keep monitoring the swelling.

The doctor also discussed the potential need for a Tracheostomy and a PEG tube (feeding tube). She feels this will be necessary to safely protect his airway and provide comfort.
