There’s a lot of pressure right now for women to be “skinny,” but here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough: how we fuel and train our bodies before perimenopause and menopause can make a huge difference in how we feel later.

As hormones begin to shift, women naturally lose muscle and bone density. If we’ve spent years under-eating, avoiding strength training, or chasing the scale instead of nourishment, our bodies have very little reserve. That’s when we see more fatigue, stubborn weight gain, aches and pains, blood sugar issues, brain fog, and a harder time maintaining strength and confidence.

This isn’t about weight or appearance. You can be thin and still be under-nourished. Muscle is protective. Proper nutrition is protective. Strength training, enough protein, healthy fats, and minerals help support metabolism, bones, joints, and even mood during this transition.

Malnourished at Any Size: Why Nourishment Matters More Than the Scale

You don’t have to be “skinny” to be under-nourished. Malnutrition simply means your body isn’t getting what it needs — and that can happen at any size, especially in midlife. I’m seeing more women with muscle loss, aging skin, and brain fog not because of weight, but because their nutrition is too low to support their body.

Loss of muscle is one of the first signs. After 40, we naturally lose muscle each year, and low protein intake (sometimes from busy schedules, dieting, or the appetite drop from GLP-1 medications) speeds this up. When protein and key nutrients are too low, the body breaks down muscle, slows metabolism, and energy drops.

Malnutrition also shows up in the skin and brain. Low intake of B vitamins, omega-3s, antioxidants, and protein can create brain fog, fatigue, and dull or aging skin because the body can’t repair the way it should.

The good news? This is fixable. Prioritizing protein, colorful foods, healthy fats, and strength training can restore tone, energy, and clarity. Your body deserves to be nourished — not restricted.

Sugar + Women Over 50: What It Does to Your Gut, Hormones & Brain

As we move into our 50s, our bodies become much more sensitive to things we used to bounce back from — and sugar is one of the biggest triggers.

Here’s what most women don’t realize:

-Sugar disrupts gut health.
It feeds the “bad” bacteria, throws off digestion, and makes bloating, constipation, or cramping worse, especially as estrogen naturally declines.

-It creates hormonal chaos.
Blood sugar spikes can worsen hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, and fatigue. When insulin is constantly elevated, it pushes cortisol up too… and suddenly everything feels out of balance.

-It increases inflammation.
This can show up as joint pain, puffiness, headaches, or feeling “puffy” and inflamed for no clear reason.

-And it affects the brain.
A high-sugar diet increases inflammation in the brain and has been linked to greater cognitive decline — something many women start worrying about in midlife as we watch our parents age.

You don’t need a life without sweetness — just a little more intention.

Small shifts that help big:
• Add protein to every meal to stabilize hormones and to build lean muscle mass
• Choose fruit or dark chocolate for a sweet craving
• Get 25–30g of fiber daily to feed the good gut bacteria
• Occasional sweets are ok but should not be a daily ritual

Many of us take in more processed sugar than we realize. Carbohydrates break down into sugar in the body, so even foods that feel ‘healthy’—like granola bars, flavored yogurts, cereals, breads, and smoothies—can add up quickly. Alcohol and sugary drinks, like Starbucks lattes or flavored coffees, are also major hidden sources of sugar. Once clients understand where these hidden sugars come from, it becomes much easier to manage energy, cravings, and overall progress.

When you support your gut, steady your blood sugar, and reduce inflammation, everything feels more manageable, mood, energy, sleep, digestion, even brain clarity.

This is the kind of “midlife reset” that changes how you feel from the inside out.
