Salty Dawg Sailing Association is offering a NOLS Wilderness First Aid course, October 17 and 18 in Norfolk, Virginia. This 16-hour, hands-on course covers the Patient Assessment System, treatment for injuries and illnesses common in remote settings, environmental emergencies, and evacuation decisions, with half the time spent in realistic scenarios. You'll walk away with NOLS Wilderness First Aid and Epinephrine Auto-injector certifications, and the course meets USCG first aid requirements for a merchant mariner credential.

If you're prepping for the Marion Bermuda Race, this belongs on your list right next to sail checks and safety gear. Offshore, you and your crew are the first responders.

In 2027, the Marion Bermuda Race will host its 50th edition. This isn't just another race year. It's the one every sailor, past and future, is going to be talking about for the next fifty.

If you've been sailing this race for years, this is the edition to bring your best crew back for. If you've never done it, there's no better year to make it your first.
Registration is open now, and spots don't last once the fleet fills. Early entry rates end December 15, so the sooner your boat is signed up, the more you save and the more time you have to prep.

Sad news. John was an incredible storyteller, especially in the offshore racing sphere. He will be greatly missed!

Eight Bells: John Rousmaniere

1944-2026

Sailor, historian, advocate for safety at sea, and 2020 National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee, whose books became essential reading for generations of sailors, died on August 8, 2026. He was 82.

The Marion Bermuda Race’s Celestial class has been part of the event since the very first start in 1977. Roughly a fifth to a quarter of the fleet still chooses to navigate the old way, shooting the sun, stars, planets, and moon, plotting a running fix by hand, and trusting the math over a screen. Sail Celestial and your elapsed time gets a 3% reduction, but ask anyone who has done it and they will tell you the real reward is standing on deck at dawn with a sextant, working out exactly where you are with nothing but angles and time.

If you are racing Celestial in 2027, or just want to sharpen skills you already have, The Nav Station is running a seminar to get you ready. Two full days of sight reduction, the Noon Sight, sextant technique, plotting, and the Celestial Running Fix, taught by instructors with more than 30 Bermuda races between them and three Navigator Trophy wins in the Celestial class.

Since 1977, the Marion Bermuda Race has stayed true to its Corinthian roots. No professional crews required, no superyacht budget, just a boat, a crew willing to stand watch through the night, and the nerve to point toward Bermuda and go.

Five decades of navigators plotting by stars, families sailing together across generations, and rookies crossing the finish line as changed sailors. That Corinthian spirit, sailing for the love of it, is exactly what we're celebrating in 2027.

Join us for a new racing opportunity on Buzzards Bay in 2026!

BYC’s Salty 100 returns this summer on July 10 -11 in an exciting new format, sailing alongside the 58th Parker Converse Tower Race in a new collaboration between the Beverly Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club.

Designed like a half-marathon/full-marathon pairing, the two races are distinct but sailed together: Tower Race competitors will sail the traditional 48-mile course on Buzzards Bay, while Salty 100 teams will complete the same course twice, adding a second lap for an extended offshore challenge. Additionally, the Salty 100 has been named an Official Feeder Race for the Marion Bermuda Race, with some teams using it as a tune-up for the 50th Anniversary edition in 2027. We hope you’ll come out to race with us for this new, special event!

Shout-out to Community Boating Center's Youth Offshore Team for registering TWO boats in the combined Tower & Salty 100 races. That's right - two entries, double the determination and a whole lot of next-generation talent.

These dedicated sailors are pushing beyond the basics of racing - they're mastering offshore navigation, watch systems, teamwork, weather strategy and seamanship, taking on real offshore challenges and showing what teamwork, grit, and passion look like out on the water.
