🔴⚫️ THROWBACK THURSDAY | MARION WRESTLING 2025-26⚫️🔴

Taking it back to the 2025–2026 Marion Senior High School Wrestling State Team and an outstanding finish to the season in Salem, VA! 🤼‍♂️🌪️

Marion sent 7 wrestlers to the VHSL Class 2 State Tournament, bringing home 3 All-State medals:
🥈 Caden Hash — State Runner-Up
🥈 Max Golliher — State Runner-Up
Garrett Moore — 4th Place

The Hurricanes battled their way to a 9th-place team finish in the VHSL Class 2 State Tournament, finishing among the best programs in the state!

The following week also included a piece of Marion Wrestling history.

🔴 Morgan Tilson capped off her freshman season by becoming the FIRST GIRL STATE QUALIFIER in Marion Wrestling history, competing in the inaugural VHSL Girls State Wrestling Tournament!

8 State Qualifiers.
3 State Placers.
2 State Finalists.
1 Historic Girls State Qualifier.
9th in Class 2.

A weekend that added another chapter to the tradition of Marion Wrestling!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: 2014 MARION WRESTLING

Today we look back at a special season in Marion Wrestling history—the 2014 Hurricanes! 🌪️

The 2014 team put together an incredible 12-1 record, continuing the tradition of excellence that has defined Marion Wrestling for generations.

But the season was made even more memorable by Ryan Crowell, who etched his name into Marion Wrestling history as the 2nd State Champion in program history! 🏆

Ryan capped off his outstanding high school career with 135 career victories and was also recognized as an Academic All-American, showing that his success went far beyond the wrestling mat.

From the practice room to the classroom and ultimately the state championship podium, Ryan represented what it means to be a Marion Hurricane. His accomplishments remain an important part of the proud history of Marion Wrestling.

Throwback Thursday | 1994 Marion Wrestling

“Marion wrestling is the greatest. It’s the best!”
Those words from the 1994 Marion Wrestling team perfectly captured the pride and excitement surrounding a 13-2-1 Scarlet Hurricanes squad.

The 1994 team put together an outstanding season, earning:
🏆 Powell Valley Tournament Champions
🏆 District Champions
🥉 3rd Place – Region IV
🏅 5th Place – State Tournament
💪 13-2-1 Overall Record

The season was highlighted by a team that grew together—not only as wrestlers, but as friends and teammates.

The Hurricanes battled through a demanding schedule and continued to improve throughout the season with the guidance of Coach Steve Wright.

⭐ Andy Kalber was named District Wrestler of the Year

The yearbook described wrestling as a contest where the winner must be physically and mentally superior—and this team certainly embraced that challenge.

🏆 Throwback Thursday | 1980 Marion Scarlet Hurricanes Wrestling 🏆

Long before the bright lights, social media, and digital scoreboards, there was a group of wrestlers who built the foundation of Marion Wrestling through hard work, grit, and determination.
The 1980 Scarlet Hurricanes proved that success is earned one practice, one takedown, and one match at a time.

🔥 Highlights from the season:
🤼 Defeated Richlands 72-0, becoming just the third high school in history to win a match where every wrestler recorded a pin!
🏆 Finished #1 in the Southwest District
💪 Sent six wrestlers to the VHSL State Tournament
🥇 Regional Champion: Robert Murphy
🥉 Regional 3rd Place: Jeff Griffith & Hugh Murphy
4️⃣ Regional 4th Place: Donnie Little, Kenny Burkett, and Jeff Blevins

TBT: The year is 2002.

The Marion Hurricanes put together another outstanding season led by Coach Steve Wright. The Hurricanes finished with a 14-4 dual meet record while proving that hard work and determination were the foundation of the program.

🥈 Region IV Runner-Up
🥈 Big Blue Classic Runner-Up

That mindset was evident every time the Hurricanes stepped onto the mat. Whether it was battling through tough duals, grinding out pins, or celebrating another team trophy, this squad embodied the Marion wrestling tradition of relentless effort and accountability.

In the VHSL State Tournament: TJ Yonts finished 6th at 119lb and Daniel Pennington finished 6th at 140lb.

The 2002 team helped continue a culture that has defined Marion Wrestling for generations—one built on discipline, toughness, and pride in wearing the scarlet red.

TBT: 1981-1982 Marion Wrestling

A season that set the standard.
The 1981-82 Hurricanes battled their way to a 9-0 district record and 10-0 Dual Season. Marion Wrestling followed up by sending 10 wrestlers to the regional tournament. From there, 9 Hurricanes punched their ticket to the VHSL State Championships—a remarkable accomplishment that showcased the depth and determination of the program.

At the state tournament in Hampton:
🥈 Donnie Little finished State Runner-up
🏅Terri Billings earned a 4th-place finish

From the intense matches on the mat to the team standing shoulder-to-shoulder before competition, this team captures what Marion Wrestling has always been about—hard work, toughness, and brotherhood.

The foundation laid by Coach Rhodes and the wrestlers of the early 1980s continues to inspire every Hurricane who steps onto the mat today.
