Devil Dogs Season Comes To A Close: Lose To Richland Post 215
Columbia, SC. July 15, 2026.

It was an incredible season with the first trip back to the final week of the state playoffs in many years. That thrilling roller coaster ride ended on Wednesday as the Marion Jr. Legion Devil Dogs could not keep pace with Richland Post 215. They lost 4-0 after finding themselves in the loser bracket from a heartbreaking loss on Tuesday at muddy West Florence High School at the hands of Florence Post One with a walk-off sacrifice fly. That game saw three player ejections. The dogs had left their heart and soul right there in the P*e Dee but were forced to play another game while other teams were resting up for the finals- beginning Friday.

Richland Post 215 Gold AAA got on the board in the first inning after an error scored two runs.

Tim Manning earned the win for Richland Post 215 Gold AAA. The pitcher gave up one hit and no runs over five and one-third innings, striking out seven and walking one. Nijel Smith took the loss for the Marion Jr. Legion Devil Dogs. The southpaw went six innings, surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out two and walking three.

Hayden Smith went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Devil Dogs in hits. Marion turned one double play in the game.

Peyton Souter led Richland Post 215 Gold AAA with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The right fielder went 2-for-2 on the day. Richland Post 215 were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Easton Ferrell had the most chances in the field with eight.

Richland will go on to the state finals versus Florence and Sumter. Marion will look to reload next year for a championship run. With a talented and exuberant young coaching staff, hopefully the only changes for Marion next year will be their post number as Marion and Nichols will join their Legion posts together.

Post 5 Devil Dogs Make State In Thrilling Win Over Socastee, 6-5
SOCASTEE. July 10, 2026.

With both teams defeating the other on the road in Games One and Two, Game Three was going to be for all the marbles. Things had gotten really chippy between these two teams- even interrupting the handshake line on Thursday night when Post 5 lost 7-4 on their home field. As the lights were turning off and the tents came down in Marion, the Dogs' players left together as a team through the front gate. The fans could overhear their confident chatter: "they would go on the road and bring home a win. Count on it!" On Friday night, they would not disappoint.

The Devil Dogs bested Socastee Post 178 by a 6-5 score on Friday after taking the lead late in the game. The Dogs were down 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Patience at the plate was showing as the rival pitcher was out of steam. The Dogs loaded the bases and then JJ Welch drew a walk to score the tying run.

Socastee had been the first to get on the board at their home park in the first inning when Jaedyn Weisweaver drew a walk that scored a bases-loaded run.

Post 5 then captured the lead, 2-1, in the top of the second after Nijel Smith grounded into a fielder's choice to score one run and Liam Newell hit a sacrifice fly to do the same. The Devil Dogs added one run in the third when Holden Lane grounded into a fielder's choice to move the third base runner, making the score 3-1.

Then Mr. Heartbreak seemed to knock on the door for the Dogs. A grand slam to right field by Malachi Wojcik gave Socastee Post 178 the lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the fourth. But Mr. Heartbreak was actually there for his date with Socastee in the seventh.

The Devil Dogs recaptured the lead, 6-5, in the top of the sixth when Hayden Smith singled to score one run, and Welch drew a walk to push in another.

Newell earned the win for the Marion Post 5 Devil Dogs. The righty allowed six hits and five runs over six innings, striking out three and walking four. Josh Keyser took the loss for Socastee Post 178. The pitcher went five and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits, striking out one and walking five. Hayes Williamson had "ice-blood" last night as he stepped on the mound in the biggest pressure cooker of the season. With only a one run lead, Newell was out of pitches. Williamson strode in, shut down the Socastee side and earned the save.

Caden Hyatt and Braxton Bailey were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for the Dogs while hitting back-to-back. Nijel Smith, Lane, Newell, and Hayden Smith each drove in one run for Post 5. The team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing nine walks in the game. Lane and Colten Moody led the team with two bases on balls each.

Wojcik led Socastee Post 178 with four runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-4 on the day. Wojcik and Cohen Dennis each collected two hits for Socastee.

Post 5 Coach Will Daniels said, "When this season started, I told them we would be good when we became a team. They have done that! This year started with forty Jr. Legion Teams in the State of South Carolina. Now we’re down to the final 8 and it’s not over. The road starts here." In his first year, Coach Daniels has positioned the team to enter the American Legion AAA State Playoffs on Monday. Likely projections show the Dogs may play Monday in Florence with the official time and location to be announced later.

Amazing Devil Dog Rallies Take Out Socastee, 18-13
SOCASTEE. July 8th, 2026.

Despite trailing by five runs early, the Marion Jr. Legion Devil Dogs rallied to defeat Socastee Post 178 by a barn-burning score of 18 to 13 on Wednesday at Socastee High School.

Both offenses were strong at the plate. The Dogs collected 16 hits and Socastee had 11 in this high-scoring affair.

Marion stranded several base runners in the first at bat and then Socastee piled up a 5 run lead in the bottom of the first inning when Cohen Dennis doubled. He scored one run. Cooper Belfield then homered to right field, scoring two more runs. Things looked bleak already. Then errors scored two more runs. The Dogs appeared to already be whipped.

Not these junk yard dogs! Marion then flipped the game on its head in the top of the second by scoring seven runs on six hits to take the lead, 7-5. A ground out by JJ Welch drove in two runners to get the flood gates opened.

Then, the Devil Dogs added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Socastee committed an error. Holden Lane would single to center field, and Caden Hyatt grounded out, but each scored one run.

Socastee tried to climb back on top with four runs scored in the bottom of the seventh on a grand slam to left field by Jace Crowther. It was too little too late. They fell by score of 18-13.

Holden Lane earned the win for the Devil Dogs. The righty allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) over four innings, striking out three and walking four. Walker King took the loss for Socastee. The righty went two and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits, striking out none and walking two. Seth Bellamy led things off on the mound for Socastee Post 178. The hurler gave up two hits and five runs over one and one-third innings, striking out two and walking five. Caden Lee collected the save for Marion.

The Dogs piled up 16 hits in the game. Colten Moody drove the middle of the lineup, leading Marion with three runs batted in. The infielder went 3-for-5 on the day. Hayden Smith, Holden Lane, Nijel Smith, and Caden Hyatt each collected multiple hits for the Devil Dogs. Marion had a strong eye at the plate, tallying 12 walks for the game. Smith and Welch led this team category with two bases on balls each. Smith and Welch also stole multiple bases as the Devil Dog team took six extra bases in the game.

Socastee Post 178 amassed 11 hits in the game. Crowther provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led them with four runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Belfield and Crowther each collected two hits. Malachi Wojcik led Socastee with three walks. Overall, the team had a good eye at the plate, collecting 10 walks in the game. Crowther stole two bases.

Post 5 Devil Dogs Defeat Camden 2-0 In Do-or-Die Pitcher's Duel
CAMDEN. July 6th, 2026

In the Revolutionary War, General Horatio Gates told Francis Marion he would not need his assistance in Camden to beat the British only to suffer the worst defeat of the entire war. Tonight, the spirit of Marion paid another visit to Camden's boys to show how it is done on the baseball diamond. Both playoff teams were strong on the mound this evening but Marion's Junior Legion Devil Dogs simply dominated Camden Post 17 by score of 2-0.

J.J. Welch started the game for the Dogs and recorded 21 outs in a season best "complete game" shut out. The Dogs got on the board in the top of the first inning after Colten Moody grounded out to move runners, and then Post 5 also scored on a wild pitch.

Welch earned the win for the Devil Dogs. He allowed only one hit and no runs over seven innings, striking out two and walking two. Michael Carlson took the loss for the Camden Post 17 Prospects. The hurler went four innings, allowing two runs on no hits, striking out six but walking four.

Moody led the Dogs offensively with one run batted in. Bryson Davis went 1-for-4 at the plate to lead Post 5 in hits. The difference was, under pressure of playoff elimination by the higher seed, the Dogs were sure-handed in the field. They didn't commit a single error. Aiden Lancaster had the most plays in the field with five. Matthew Bouknight led Camden Post 17 with one hit in two at bats.

The Dogs will now start a three game series vs Socastee on Wednesday July 8th on the road in Socastee. An additional game will take place on Thursday and a possible game on Friday. Stay tuned for the time and location of the 2nd and 3rd game.

Post 5 Devil Dogs Lose Pitcher's Duel to Sumter in Game 2
SUMTER. June 30, 2026.

Both teams were strong on the mound on Tuesday, but Sumter scratched out the only run needed at the plate to get their Game Two, one-to-nothing victory over the Marion Jr. Legion Devil Dogs. Holden Lane started the game for the Dogs. In an amazing effort on his part, he recorded 18 of the Devil Dog putouts.

Sumter achieved the only score in the fourth inning after Bradey Palmo drew a walk, scoring one run.

Brady Ardis earned the win Sumter. The starter allowed three hits and no runs over seven innings, striking out one and walking none. Lane sadly had to take the loss on his season's best effort for the Devil Dogs. He went six innings, allowing only one run on just four hits. He struck out four and walked five.

Hayden Smith, Lane, and JJ Welch each collected one hit for Marion. The Dogs turned one double play in the game. They were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Welch made the most plays with five.

Palmo led Sumter with the one run batted in. Cody Schultz, Brantley Adams, Easton Donlon, and Brayden Taylor collected one hit each for Sumter.

The dogs should be proud of their season thus far. They are tied for third in the toughest division. The Lakelands division is the only other that has teams better than (.500) at the fourth position. But the Legion has changed the rules from past seasons to shorten the playoffs. In years past, a 3 game series would start on Monday. Now, the Devil Dogs await a wild card playoff schedule that will likely see them on the road Monday of next week in a must win situation. Stay tuned for the details right here.

Sumter Post 15 Chain The Devil Dogs Early And Win 14-3.
MARION. June 29th, 2026.

The Marion Jr. Legion Devil Dogs couldn't keep up with Sumter Post 15 Monday and fell 14-3 at Fox Field in Marion. The Dogs will have to flush the bad memory quick as they journey over to Sumter tonight for their final regular season game with playoff implications.

Sumter got on the board in the top of the first inning after an error which scored two runs. Brady Ardis singled to score the first two, and Knox Welch scored one more. Easton Donlon singled, scoring one as well. Then, Dog's Pitcher JJ Welch induced Koy Wright to hit into a fielder's choice- but one run still scored.

Sumter added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Donlon singled to the left side of the infield. Wright hit a sacrifice fly, and Cody Schultz singled to center field, each scoring one run.

Donlon earned the win for Sumter. The hurler gave up three hits and three runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking five. Hayes Williamson pitched three innings in relief for Marion. The righty allowed six hits and five runs but struck out three and walked three. Welch took the loss for Marion going two innings, surrendering nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, and walking one.

Hayden Smith and Welch were the one-two punch in the lineup for Marion as each drove in one run for the Dogs. The Dog's bats did little barking last night as only Smith, Holden Lane, and Bryson Davis collected a hit for Marion.

Sumter however collected 16 hits in the game. The ball just seemed to find a way to fall into gaps with no one at home. Schultz, Brantley Adams, and Donlon each collected three hits for Sumter. Donlon went 3-for-4 at the plate but also led the team with four runs batted in. Peyton Osteen collected two hits for Sumter in three at bats.

Regardless of Tuesdays outcome, playoff baseball should be in the Dog's future, but they could be on better footing if they split this series on Tuesday. Safe travel to the Dog's fans as the journey to Sumter's Riley Park tonight.

Welch and the Dogs Puts On A Hitting Clinic In High Scoring Win Over Lake City Jr. Legion
Lake City, SC. June 25th, 2026.

JJ Welch collected three hits in five at bats, as Marion's Devil Dogs defeated Lake City Jr. Legion by a score of 14-10 on Thursday. The Dogs had a 4-0 lead and looked set to cruise to victory headed into the fourth inning, but Lake City posted up six runs to place that in doubt. Welch doubled in the seventh inning to reignite the scoring machine after he singled in the first and doubled in the third.

Both offenses were strong at the plate as the Devil Dogs collected 17 hits and Lake City had 14 in this high-scoring affair.

The Dogs opened the scoring in the top of the first on the strength of two singles when Hayden Smith ripped another one scoring the run. They would add one more to lead 3-0 in the top of the second inning despite a brilliant double play by Lake City that was not enough to avoid the score. One more Devil Dog run came in the third after Colten Moody singled to right field. The Dogs looked bulletproof by score of four (4) to nothing (0).

Lake City then flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits to take the lead, 6-4. If you went to the concession stand, you may have thought the scoreboard operator had simply encountered technical difficulties, but the truth was Marion was now trailing. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Tylar Brown that drove in two. Brown had been a hard out to get two nights earlier in Marion as the leadoff hitter.

The Devil Dogs were unphased and determined. They took a hard swipe at the pinata and walked off with all the candy, scoring a "team record" nine runs on eight hits to take the lead and the win, 14-10. The driving force was a double by Braxton Bailey following a 6-pitch at-bat that drove in two runs. John Bohachic was a big contributor as well- going 3 for 5 at the plate today.

Holden Lane stepped on the bump first for Marion. The starting pitcher surrendered only two hits and no runs over two innings, striking out one and walking none. Dalton Filyaw stepped on the mound first for Lake City. The right-handed pitcher surrendered four hits and three runs (two earned) over two innings, striking out none and walking none. Nijel Smith pitched two excellent innings of scoreless relief for Marion. Smith allowed only one hit, striking out three and walking one to seal the deal.

The Devil Dogs tallied 17 hits in the game. Welch and John Bohachic each collected three. Moody, Smith, and Bryson Davis also collected multiple hits for Marion.

Lake City is the best team in the region that just happens to have the worst record. They have been so close to stealing wins from all the region leaders. They accumulated 14 legitimate hits in this game. Filyaw, Thomas Matthews, and Carter Shady each collected three hits while Brown went 2-for-5 at the plate and also led the team with three runs batted in (RBIs).

The Marion Jr. Legion Devil Dogs will play their final "regular season" "home game" on Monday against the Sumter P15s. If Marion wants a place atop the entire division, they need to beat Sumter in both games (Game 2 will be Tuesday on the road). Splitting these games will make for a nervous wait on the playoff bracket to look at tie breakers against teams they have lost to. See you at Fox Field on Monday at 7PM. Devil Dogs Defeat Lake City in First Meeting, 7-4.

Marion's Jr. Legion Devil Dogs were triumphant over Lake City's Jr. Legion 7-4 on Tuesday. It initially appeared that Marion was taking the one win, six loss Lake City team lightly. Lake City got on the board in the top of the first inning after Easton Prosser hit a sacrifice fly, and Thomas Matthews singled up the middle, each scoring one run. They lead 2-0.

However, the Devil Dogs flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on four hits to take the lead, 5-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Colten Moody that drove in one.

Hayes Williamson earned the win for the Devil Dogs. The starting pitcher scattered eight hits with only four runs (just two earned) over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking three. Eli Culick took the loss for Lake City tossing only one-third of an inning, but allowing five runs on four hits, striking out none and walking three. Caden Lee collected the save for the Devil Dogs.

Holden Lane provided a spark in the middle of the lineup, and led Marion with two RBIs. The infielder went 1-for-1 on the day. Bryson Davis was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Devil Dogs in hits. Marion also turned an impressive double play in the game to deny Lake City any chance to pull even.

Prosser drove the middle of the lineup for Lake City with two runs batted in. The first baseman went 2-for-3 on the day. Tylar Brown, Matthews, and Prosser each collected two hits for Lake City. Marion would have scored a few more runs but Lake City turned two double plays in the game.

Once Marion retook the lead in the bottom of the first, things never seemed uncertain. Lake City only managed to scratch out a few more runs when an unexpected sheet of rain popped up while Marion was on defense during an uncharacteristically cool, breezy June evening.

Next up for Marion will be the 2nd game with Lake City on the road Thursday in Lake City.
