Sideline Cancer TBT Basketball Team

Sideline Cancer is a team of overseas basketball players and former college standouts who come together to play in The Basketball Tournament.

The team's namesake is based on the Griffith Family Foundation's Sideline Cancer fundraiser. The team's GM Billy Clapper and John Boyer learned about, at the time, a new basketball tournament, The Basketball Tournament, in 2014. Billy and John approached Cathy Griffith of the Griffith Family Foundation about using the Foundation's student run initiative Sideline Cancer as the team's name. The team

🚨Elam Ending #1 - Mo Creek Sends Sideline Cancer To The Championship Game Defeating 4-Time Champion Overseas Elite & Joe Johnson - We Did It For Jermaine🚨

Sideline Cancer found itself on a MIRACLE RUN in the TBT Bubble in 2020, ranked 22nd out of 24 teams. En route to the Final 4 we defeated Team Hines, Challenge ALS, and Syracuse, finding ourselves matched up with the 4-Time Champion Overseas Elite & future NBA HOF, Joe Johnson ‼️

The game was back and forth, but Sideline Cancer never had a lead in the game until KEENE came off a ball-screen set by Eric Thompson … Everyone in the gym thought Marcus ‘Elam Keene would shoot the ball, but he passed it to Maurice Creek who made one of the most ICONIC SHOTS in TBT History, sending Sideline Cancer to the Championship Game🔥

In the moments that followed, Sideline Cancer trended on Twitter behind Dr. Fauci and ahead of Kanye West. After the game, Mo told everyone that the shot was for Jermaine Marshall, a former teammate who died during his pro season a year and a half before the shot. Jermaine helped build this team and we ALL knew he was looking down on us from above, SMILING EAR TO EAR as his friend hit the BIGGEST SHOT of his life‼️

🚨Elam Ending #2 - The Miracle in Charleston - Marcus ‘Elam Strikes Again🚨

In the Charleston, WV Regional Final in 2021, Sideline Cancer found themselves in a BATTLE vs. 12 Seeded ETSU Alumni‼️

After trailing for the entire game, Joseph Lewis III and his teammates got a HUGE STOP, 3 points away from the Target Score💜 After multiple failed Tip-In’s the ball popped to KEENE giving him a chance to WIN THE GAME‼️

Almost everyone in the building thought Marcus would attack the rim or pull the ball out, but for those that truly knew Marcus, they knew the ball was GOING UP🔥 At the logo, Keene “Went For The Win” in what became one of the MOST ICONIC SHOTS in TBT history, NOTHING BUT NET🔥 A celebration erupted like few in TBT History and the call was spot on “Marcus ‘Elam Strikes Again‼️”

Thank you to ALL that were a part of this moment as it’s truly one of the greatest moments in our history🙏

🚨Elam Ending #3 - Chris Coffey’s Dunk Wins The Louisville Regional In HIS Home City🚨

One of the HARDEST things to do in TBT is to WIN a game in front of 6,000+ fans, only to turn around the next night to play in front of 60+ fans… In 2025, our Sideline Cancer Team was faced with that challenge, pulling off a fantastic comeback, capped off by an Chris Coffey dunk to advance to the Elite 8, winning the Louisville Regional🔥

On a day where Sideline Cancer GM, Billy Clapper Basketball cancer was put in remission by doctors, the team pulled off a MAJOR win in his honor🙏 We never led ONE TIME until we were 2 points away from the Elam Ending Victory‼️

After a terrible shot by LA Ignite, Marcellus Earlington got the rebound and pitched it to Alonzo Verge who went Coast to Coast, but barely missed the layup… As ALWAYS, Mr. Coffey was trailing the play and threw down one of the most ICONIC DUNKS in Sideline Cancer and TBT History‼️ After the dunk, he made it known that his hometown of Louisville was “HIS CITY”🔥

🚨Elam Ending #4 - Marcus Earns The Nickname “Marcus Elam Keene” vs. Team Hines in the 1st Round of TBT 2020 Bubble - See You Tuesday🚨

Sideline Cancer came into the 2020 Bubble as the 22nd Seed out of 24 teams, one of the lowest seeded teams in the tournament. Our 1st Round matchup was against a LOADED Team Hines and many had them as the dark horse to win it all‼️

After being down by double digits for most of the game, including 13pts in the 3rd Quarter, Sideline Cancer cranked up the defense led by Remy Abell & Eric Thompson to get within striking distance💪🏻 KEENE got BUSY on the offensive end, scoring a game-high 29 points w/ 6 assists, many of which came in the 2nd half🔥

After one of the CRAZIEST Elam Endings in the history of TBT which saw 7 footer Ethan Happ NOT try to score on Marcus Keene in the post late in the Elam Ending due to score situation, Marcus got the ball, received a high screen from ET, crossed over twice and hit the shot over Ethan Happ’s contested shot🔥‼️ All the announcer Matt Martucci had to say was “See You Tuesday” which is still an inside joke within the Sideline Cancer Organization🙏 This landed Marcus and Sideline Cancer on SportsCenter Top 10 Plays and triggered an iconic run to the championship game💜

Today, KEENE is the all-time leader in Elam Endings, this was his 1st of many🏆

🚨Elam Ending #5 - Alonzo Verge’s Runner In The Lane Made It SEVEN (1st Round) Wins In A Row🚨

Last year’s TBT run to the Elite 8 would NOT have happened if Alonzo Verge doesn’t make this “Runner In The Lane” against The MADD KATS in Round 1🔥

With the game tied at 82 ALL and the Target Score set at 83, Chris Coffey set a screen that got Zo Verge loose in the paint, resulting in an Elam Ending that brought RELIEF to the Sideline Cancer Team and Fans💜 This shot propelled us to defeat The Ville - Louisville’s TBT Team on their home court in the next round and led to an iconic finish against LA Elite in the Sweet 16‼️

🚨Elam Ending #6 - Jermaine Marrow Gets Revenge On Louisville - Calls Bank On The Elam🚨

After playing one of the BEST Halves of basketball in Sideline Cancer History extending the lead to nearly 30pts, The Ville - Louisville’s TBT Team made a LATE CHARGE to cut the lead to 4 in the Elam Ending‼️

After almighty_mayno2 made a 3-Ball to extend the lead to (70-63) and Chris Coffey got a steal on the other end… Jermaine Marrow found himself with the ball and no one guarding him in transition‼️ Everyone knew the ball was going up & he banked it in for the WIN at Louisville🔥

Sideline Cancer advanced to the Sweet 16 on the Marrow 3-Ball, eventually winning the regional🏆

🚨Elam Ending #7 - Mike Daum’s Monster Game & Game Winning 3-Ball Wins It For Priscilla🚨

In Cincinnati, 2022, Sideline Cancer found itself in a DOG FIGHT against another “Bigger Than Basketball” team Team Defeat Diabetes at Xavier… Mike Daum had a MONSTER GAME, scoring 30pts and securing the W for Sideline Cancer with the game tied at 77🔥

After the game, Priscilla Bonica (A Cancer Warrior) and Mike Daum shared a moment in the hallway, BOTH wearing their favorite number 24🙏 The energy after Mike Daum’s shot with Priscilla and friends was palpable‼️ Anyone who witnessed this moment will NEVER forget it💜

Unfortunately, Priscilla eventually lost her battle to cancer, but left a lasting mark and legacy on our team 🙏
