ALERT TO CARRY CONCEALED PERMIT (CCW) HOLDERS

Message from Sheriff Bernal,

It is disturbing to hear of a data breach by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) that has made public the personal information of California’s citizen concealed weapon (CCW) permit holders. It is unclear what the scope of the breach is at this time. I am very concerned about this data breach and the risk it poses to Monterey County and California’s CCW permit holders. The data breach was in conjunction with DOJ’s launch of its “2022 Fi****ms Dashboard Portal.” The breach included, but was not limited to, the names, ages, and addresses of individuals who hold CCW permits in California. It appears that before the breach was detected by DOJ, the information was copied and at least some portion of it was posted on the internet. The Dashboard portal has since been deactivated.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is issuing this alert to make all CCW permit holders in Monterey County aware of the situation so they can take appropriate precautions. DOJ has issued a statement regarding this situation and has offered some tips to monitor your personal information in the event it might have been exposed. At this point, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office does NOT have a list of CCW permit holders whose data was leaked. The California Department of Justice is planning to notify everyone whose data may be compromised as discussed in DOJ's press release. You can access DOJ’s statement here.
