PRESS RELEASE
In a time when the country feels the true value of social interaction with neighbors, we are all reminded about the power the Marble Falls Soapbox Classic event has had at bringing the community together for a decade.

After the 2020 Adult Soapbox Derby event got canceled, We have had an unbelievable outcry from the community. Young and old, local businesses, our event sponsors, racers, volunteers, race fans and the tourists that come to the event year after year. The love for the event is strong and people are begging for its return.

In these unprecedented and unpredictable times of the Covid-19 crisis, festivals and events nationwide have been canceling their 2021 events. As soon as it is safe and reasonable for our team to move forward on our intentions, we will do so.

In the meantime, we need your help and support. When we work together, anything can happen!

WE ARE SAD TO ANNOUNCE
THE END OF THE MARBLE FALLS SOAPBOX CLASSIC
It’s been an amazing 10 years, and the 10th annual was one of the best! We are so thankful for the support of all of our racers, sponsors, volunteers and fans.
We’re very disappointed that we couldn’t find a workable plan to keep derby going forward. After the Derby gave up approximately 30% of our Main Street closure for the event in 2019, The city presented us with another even more restricting proposal this year...... please follow the link to read on...

DERBY UPDATE:.
The city met with the Derby Board of Directors last Monday to discuss the event street closure and timeline.
After the meeting the Derby presented the city with two different proposed street closures. Both gave up approx 30% of the Main Street closures that the Derby had been granted it's first nine years of the event.
Last Friday, we were notified that both of our proposed maps were denied by the city. At this time they sent us a proposed event map and timeline.
We believe their proposal drastically limits both the quality of the event and it's potential for growth. Our initial thoughts were to walk away. It's heartbreaking. The all-volunteer team that produces the event, the racers, our race fans and our Sponsors..... We are all honored to bring our community together every year for a fabulous weekend of family fun! Making the event LESS fabulous is something we didn't want to have to consider.
This Monday we submitted an application with an altered version of what they sent us.
The concessions of time/space that we are willing to make will cause us to loose the following:
Derby car parade, Street Dance and Merchandise Vendors.
Now we are basically fighting for enough time to make the racing happen...and that doesn't take into consideration any event growth.

Unfortunately, we are still fighting to keep the Marble Falls Soapbox Derby alive! The main obstacles we face are the few downtown businesses that are against the event being downtown and the city staff that agree with them. Below is a link to an article written by the The Marble Falls Economic Development Corporation. It's a great article titled "Why Downtown?"
This article was written just a week or so after last years amazing 10th annual Marble Falls Soapbox Classic.... and LOOK AT THE PICTURE THEY USED..... yes ... that's right.... GO DERBY!!!!!

"Why Downtown?" was a question I was often asked when the EDC started working on the creation of a tax increment reinvestment zone (TIRZ) back in 2012.
