This post is overdue, but I could not find the right words to do Sensei Earl justice.
Last month Sensei Earl Rogers passed away at the age of 87. He was well established in the St Louis martial arts community having taught so many in several arts. He has been a member and senior instructor at AIMA for many years. He will be missed but the lessons learned from him will continue to be taught and shared.
There is so much more that can be said about such an amazing man but I will keep it simple here. Feel free to share your stories and memories. .earl

Aiki Taiso are the movements basic to aikido technique that are practiced at the beginning of each class.
Kobayashi sensei made. Clear that they are more than just warm up exercises done with stretching. They are based in the principal of Go Go No Shugyo - Awareness After Training. The purpose of the Aiki Taiso is to “know yourself” so you can take better care of yourself. Being aware during the movements of any tension or pain in your body and wha you need to do to relax them. If you are not paying attention to yourself during Aiki Taiso how will you develop a habit of learning from your Aikido. And not just learning for yourself but training your understanding so that you can help others.
As you do each movement seek to comprehend the basic movement and the direction of Ki flow. Be aware of your center. Keep weight underside. Keep relaxed, move your body in unison and let your Ki flow extending it forward.
Remember all of the arts of aikido are built upon the Aiki Taiso. .

Then and now.
The dojo has gone through a lot of changes in its nearly 50 years here. This is what the dojo looked like when I switched to Seidokan 16 years ago vs what it looks like today’s.

Love generates more love, trust begets more trust. When we meet an aggressive attack with a calm mind and body we start to defuse the situation. This allows us to accept the attack as a gift of energy, blend with and redirect it so that we can both walk away unharmed. And both better off than we were before.

Aikido deals with leading an attacker, after blending with the first touch, through a disbanding technique into a throw or pin without injuring the attacker. In order to be effective you must dissipate the energy of the attack off balancing the attackers center while strengthening your own.

“Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” Lao Tzu
“Masakatsu Agatsu” - “True victory is victory over oneself” Morihei Ueshiba

This concept is not just theoretical; it is meant to be embodied in Aikido practice, influencing how one moves, interacts with others, and approaches challenges in life. It emphasizes the importance of self-mastery and inner development as the path to true victory, rather than simply defeating an opponent.

Self awareness

Before we talk about self-defense we should first talk about self-awareness. Inside of self awareness there is self-defense. Awareness takes the focus away from being violent or fighting, and changes it to prevention by being aware and protecting yourself all situations life can throw at you.
This is application of Aiki in daily life.
If we are aware of what is developing around us we can remove ourselves from the situation before the need to defend arises.
In our technique we see this by not being on the line of the attack. “Take one step aside...”
