How to be a sports league in America today that operates with a defined set of values that aren’t beholden to money and politics? Try the Premier Ultimate League model as explained by PUL commissioner Emma Soiles.

From WUL-PUL All Star game at UFA Champ Weekend 2026.

As for the Premier League website? Mission statement below:

MISSION “To achieve equity in the sport of ultimate by increasing accessibility to the sport for and visibility of women, transgender, intersex, non-binary, genderqueer, and genderfluid people through high-quality competition, leadership experiences, and community partnerships. Board President Western Ultimate League Manisha Daryani explains how she thinks officiating and ultimate can work together to achieve wider recognition.

Like USAU, PUL and others, the Western Ultimate League uses a hybrid form of officials, commonly known as Observers, developed by Hall of Fame member Charles Kerr in the late 1990s to preserve the principles of Spirit of the Game while making the game more enjoyable and watchable for fans and players alike.

The system enables players to make calls, but requires a third party to settle disputed calls and keep the game moving in a timely fashion.

There’s a misconception that officials in the UFA 🥏 Pro Frisbee operate in antithesis to the principles of Spirit of the Game. I’m not sure this is true and I spoke with the Head of Officials and head referee Julie Gordon Morris for the Championship match on Friday between Oakland and Minnesota — a high intensity, fast-paced barnburner between intense teams with athletes focused on success.

I think her answers may be surprising to some.
