If you wanted to roll with the MOB you better listen to the proper tunes aka George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic

Founded by Jerome “Rome” Stallings in the early 1980s the all-black MOB ultimate team played up and down the east coast for 6-7 years.

“From my point of view, it was an opening to a whole other dimension. We very seldom had an opportunity to go to other communities and play and have fun and do our thing. I found out ultimate was attracting not only jocks but computer science people and political people. The ultimate family was coming from all walks of life.”

David “doc” Love and Stallings only recalled one time when they were openly faced with racist remarks. More common, they said, was the warmth and openness long-associated with the ultimate community.

“We felt welcome. It’s the only game where I felt people were themselves. People were free-minded. They were open.” Said Love

In 1991 Seattle Country Day Middle School teacher Mary Lowry started the first middle school scrimmages on Queen Anne Hill near downtown Seattle with fellow teacher Joe Bisignano and her then-husband Jeff Jorgenson.

They then organized a league for the middle schoolers and Disc NW was the follow up to that.

With budget cuts in the early 1990s, the Seattle public schools asked to organize a school-specific fall league. The rest, as they say, is history.

“Whenever the administration of a school has chosen to adopt ultimate it has been very successful,” Mary noted in 2004

No wonder she’s in the . Next time you see Mary, Joe or Jeff — give them a high five from frisbee lovers everywhere.

An enduring mystery of D1 College Nationals: what shirt is Dylan Tunnell repping?

Mystery solved: it his uncle Scott’s from the Middle Tennessee State University Ultimatics from the mid 1980s. MTSU played their first game against Huntsville in the spring of 1981. They were “throwing parties, getting money from the school and making a lot of road trips.” According to the book Ultimate: Southern Style by Kip Sharpe.

“However by the fall of 1983 and spring of 1984 fewer and fewer people were showing up to practice and the last MTSU road trip was 1984 sectionals in Mobile.”

Shout-out to Murfreesboro: let’s get those partying ultimatics back on the scene!
