The inaugural The National Professional Fishing League Military Classic( ). I can not string together enough positive adjectives or references about the week to convey how epic of an event it was. For me personally it was a "Re-Greening" (think Army Green, Air Force Blue, etc.) in the brotherhood and camaraderie that I experienced over my military career. From the pre-launch discussions and banter at the ramps during pre-fish to the banquet dinner at Bass Pro Bass Pro Shops in Kodak, TN, to the blast-off sequences and weigh-in procedures - it was electric. There was a sense of energy that I have not experienced in many years (especially in fishing) and is exactly what I needed to cap off the season.
It rained, the wind blew, the parking situation at the ramp was less than desirable, and the fishing was stingy. But everyone, even the old grumpy dudes were happy. There was a sense of gratitude and gratefulness among the Veterans that someone cared enough to spend the time, money, and energy to put this event on FOR them.
There were stories shared that made us all laugh and several that made many cry. There were Veterans from as far north as New York, west to Texas, and as far south as Florida who made the drive. There were several teams who had not seen each other in decades but shared an unbreakable bond that reunited them over fishing this event.
There were handshakes, hugs, high fives, tears, a even a few "good game butt smacks". There was plenty of inter-service rivalries, lots of Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard jokes, some questionable front deck dance moves, and shared heartache over lost friends
There were new boats, old boats, shiny boats, tin boats, boats that smoked (both inside and out) and even one sponsored by a dispensary called "The Dope Boat" - no joke. There were fishing jerseys, wife beaters, cut off jeans, camouflage, muscle shirts, boonie hats, flat brims, patrol caps, ZZ Top beards, pony tails and even a couple of mullets. It was a cornucopia of every walk of life gathered together to celebrate our country's Veterans around bass fishing, and it was EPIC.
Please stay tuned for announcements surrounding this event for 2027 and share with your Veteran friends who also enjoy the sport.
