National Science Foundation halts plan to dismantle ocean monitoring system

UPDATE: In a statement released on Thursday, June 18, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced it is halting its efforts to dismantle the ocean monitoring system that had been in place for a decade.

Included in this Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is the Pioneer Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) Array, located off the Outer Banks coast. The decision to remove that equipment was sharply criticized by scientists on the Outer Banks. Here is the NSF statement.

The fish eclipsed the previous tournament record of 914 pounds set by Top Dog in 2019 and instantly transformed the leaderboard in a tournament featuring a record purse of $9,038,225. It also automatically secured the Level V Fabulous Fisherman's Prize worth $871,250 as the first blue marlin of at least 500 pounds brought to the scales and is in line to win a whopping total payout of $6,513,187.
