Read and let this sink in.. Instructors need to teach more horsemanship and owners/riders need to do more and be better. It's not about speed, it's about the connection. Good horsemanship, good ground work, good basic training will get you there, not the spur or whip or box of artificial training tools you have in your tack room.

Buck Brannaman:
I find that there are an awful lot of people that could certainly use some help to make them better horseman, but it’s like some of them get to a certain level and the only thing they ever really master is being a snob. With these modern riders, it’s almost like it’s not even about the horse anymore—it’s about them. It’s about how the horse can make them look good. In George’s (Morris) generation, it was about what they could do to make the horse look good. They were coming from a different place. There’s a lot more that George has to offer than just how to get your horse over a jump. Fine horsemanship goes way beyond that. The truth about the horse doesn’t change—and hasn’t for several lifetimes before we were here. What’s true about horses today is the same as what was true about them hundreds of years ago. Horsemen like George, who have a logical approach and teach the basic fundamentals, will always be successful. He’s right—there are no shortcuts. Good horsemanship will always prevail over the latest gimmick sold at your local tack shop. It doesn’t matter which discipline of riding you’re talking about.

We’ve been doing a little work with some of their rescues last year and this year. “We” meaning our school I work for, Durham Ferry. It amazes me the condition these guys are in when they are seized. Thankful there is a safe place such as Oakdale Equine Rescue who dedicate their lives in making things right again. Sometimes these horses are so neglected that it may take a year to be healthy enough to be adopted. Sometimes not, it might take a couple months. Either way it takes a few vet visits, lots of hay and grain and lots of TLC. OER is holding a barn bash, dinner and an auction and lots of fun. If you can come join them for a fun evening Sept 30, you money goes to OER and all the needs these horses need. If you’d like to donate other ways because you can’t come to the dinner, please go to their page, and find all the ways you can donate. Their vet has a way you can directly donate to OER, the feed store holds an account for them, you can buy grain or pay a partial vet bill. Donate blankets or pay a shoeing bill. Any way you can is appreciated. Without an organization like them, these horses would be living miserably and wasting away, rotting from the inside out, and waiting to just die.
I personally am thankful they let us help them out. I purchased a table but there are more tables available. Join us for a night of fun! And know your fun is helping these horses get healthy and adopted!

The next chapter! I miss my Annie, and today has been emotional enough, but I think she set this one up for me. She won’t replace my girl, but she will help fill the hole in my heart. This is Katie! Welcome girl. You have some big shoes to fill. We will take it slow!
