A reminder on the 8U Boys and Girls Base-Running Rule:

Base Running-Revised Ruling.
1. Any ball that is hit in the infield, the batter will ONLY get ONE base. (ex. Ball is hit to SS who fields it and overthrows to 1st base. Runner stays on 1st base.) ANY OTHER BASE RUNNER(S) advances ONE base only.
2. If a ball is hit to the outfield, the defense must stop the lead runner or have control of the ball in
the pitcher’s circle for runners to stop.
3. The umpire will call time after the pitcher (player) is in control of the ball with at least (1) foot inside of the pitching circle and NOT ATTEMPTING to make a play. The umpire will then position base runners according to their proximity to the hash mark that is placed halfway between bases. NO ARGUING OF PLACEMENT BY THE COACHES WILL BE ALLOWED.

Please review the age group rules you are umpiring that evening before you take the field. If you are not sure of any, get with David or J.C for clarification.

Know the rules because coaches don't always remember and parents don't know.

Starting our first week of games...how exciting.
Just a reminder-
All Umpires, please wear your complete uniform-Umpire shirts, Umpire hats, and or visors. This is our statement that sets us apart from the other area parks and their umpires. We do the best job around, LOOK like an organized group and know what we are doing. Teams and fans will respect that, which males your job easier
It does make a difference.

The answer is... Ground Rule Double. The key is that it hit the ground first. If it did not hit the ground, bounces off of the outfielders glove in the air and then over the fence, it would then be a home run. Next question is, is it an error on the outfielder?? Nope, still called a home run, no error on the outfielder. Isn't baseball a great sport!!!

Umpires, keep looking over your rules so you can make the correct calls. Knowledge is power and control. That is why we are the best umpire group in the MOC.

Think about this one...it actually did happen.
A fly ball is hit deep to center field. The outfielder goes to make the catch. However it hits off the top of his glove, bounces off the ground back in the air. As he tries to catch it, he swats at it and it goes over the fence.
So is it a ground rule double, a dead ball, a 4 base error or a home run. Think about it!!

By the way, here is the answer to the post from April1st....Check it out>
It's a foul ball, dead ball. Since the batter was still in the batters box and the ball hit the bat (not the batter hit the ball) Batter returns to hit only if it is less that 2 strikes, all base runners would return to the base they were occupying. If the batter has 2 strikes, the batter is out on a 2 strike attempted bunt.

Welcome all the new and returning umpires for our 2026 baseball/softball season. It will be very important to follow this umpire page throughout the season. There will be updates and notices on game cancellation etc. David or J.C will be contacting you by the umpires group text for game scheduling and important updates and happenings.
Remember, wear your shirt, umpire hat or visor and always have your Umpire counter with you after they are passed out before the first game. Have a great year umpiring and most important....KNOW THE RULES! You are the best umpires because we have the best umpires. Madison Pride!!!

Sunday,Sunday,Sunday!!!....In case you didn't know or have forgotten, our Umpires Clinic is scheduled for this Sunday, April 26 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the complex. Meet upstairs for the first part and then on the field training. Make sure all your friends who are interested in umpiring-new or previous- come and sign up. You must have the form signed by a parent or guardian.
Pizza and pop will be available afterward.
Umpires Forms will be available at the meeting. Also one is available on our web site: www.madisoncommunityyouthpark.com under Forms.

New MOC rule....NO Head first slides into a base/home. It is ok to return to a base you occupy by diving back to it. If a head first slide is called by the umpire, it is a warning to both benches. If done again, the player will be called out and if a run scores, on the play, it will not count and that player returns to the base.

Here is one that just happened the other night during a MLB game. (By the way, we covered that in a post a little while back. See if you remember.
A batter squares around to bunt and does so. However, when he bunts, the ball bounces on the ground and hits the bat a second time while the batter is still in the batters box. The catcher quickly picks the ball up and throws to first base. Batter out at first?? Batter out because the ball hit the bat a second time??? Foul ball?? Dead ball because it hits the bat a second time??
