From the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway on the campus of Ohio University — Athens County is Ohio County #82!
Got to spend the day with who joined in the race and we finished 1st and 2nd today! Landin may have gone off the course when we went under the bridge, because staying almost straight had us going on top of the bridge, but he cracked the 30-minute barrier in the 5K! I had the turnaround not at 1.55 miles, but just after the 1.75 mile mark! So, I stopped the watch at the 5K mark and then did my warm down run back to the finish.
This was one of the smaller races I have done on the journey for all 88 counties… maybe 10 people total? It was their 3rd year putting on this event and it benefited a Christian missionary — so it was fitting that I had my “Jesus is King” headband on 😊
Landin and I got to spend time talking in the car, walking around campus after the race, saw the aquatic center, football stadium, field house, and several academic buildings as we took our own brief tour of campus. It was really beautiful down there!
One thing I told him that I was going to do well today was not go out too fast and I was going to negative split. First, I didn’t listen to myself and went out too fast. I honestly thought I had held back enough, but I didn’t. Second, it got hot on the bike path! I basically coasted the last mile as I shut down at the 2.11 mile mark. I don’t think it helped that I forgot my headphones 🤦‍♂️. Splits were 7:12.6, 7:53.6, and 8:26.8. I finished the last 0.12 miles at 7:56 pace. Next time I try to race a 5K, I may set the watch to a zone for mile 1 and force myself to hold more back.
Traveling to these races, it’s fun. Traveling with people who are important to me is even better 😊 Great hanging out with Landin today!!
And now, the magic number is at 6!!!

From the McDonald-Ruff Ice Rink in Bryan, Ohio — Williams County is Ohio County #81!
We took a family trip so that Audrey could do the kids run and Katie then pushed Audrey in the stroller as she walked the 3.26 miles. The Ali Held Herman Memorial Run/Walk was 3.26 miles because 3/26 was the day Ali gained her heavenly wings in 2021.
I got to watch Audrey run her kids race around 7:40 am. She has actually raced in 20 Ohio Counties now 😳 — I was at 14 when I officially started chasing 88. While the race wasn’t exactly 1K (it was over by a bit), Audrey’s Garmin clocked a PR by 38 seconds in the 1K distance!
The 3.26 mile distance was listed as an 8 am start time — and didn’t start until 8:25 am. There was a memorial with Ali’s dad, a friend of hers, and a few others who spoke. It was beautiful and wonderful to hear everything about Ali and her being an organ donor. Her heart went to a girl from Cincinnati named Beth.
I want to be clear that I’m not complaining about this memorial in any way, shape, or form — I am just stating a fact when I say that I was basically standing still for 25 minutes after I was ready to go. My body just can’t pull that off anymore. Several years ago, it may not have affected me, but mile 1 was so stiff, tight, and sore. While I felt better miles 2 and 3, I couldn’t get my body going to the point that I felt like today was a race. Again, a very beautiful memorial, very touching, and very moving — and while my heart and head were able to adjust to a later start, my body just couldn’t.
I didn’t look at my watch until I hit mile 3 and wanted to get my 5K split — 23:30.2 was that time. This was the 3rd time in 2024 that I’d been under 24 minutes in the 5K distance. Even though I was insanely tight, I (shocked) overran mile 1 and went 7:18.0. Mile 2 was 7:36.1, mile 3 was 7:43.6, and the last 0.12 split was 7:29 pace. Even when I backed off the last 0.20 miles, I averaged 8:23 pace. I have got to be more content with running a slower first mile and picking it up from there.
I ended up passing several people throughout the race, which made me feel very confident! I also finished 10th overall (out of 171 people) and won the Male 35-39 Age Group (out of 7 people). I was actually the 2nd of 8 Males 35-39 because the top runner was also the overall winner.
There are several races from the first 81 counties that stand out, this was one of them. I’ve ran several memorial runs before and this one really hit me because Ali was 35 years old when she passed and has 3 boys. I’ve been struggling for a while (since February really) with death. During the run today, I thought about this woman who I’d never met… and her family who had their world turned upside down just 3 years ago and how they must still be hurting. It always means a lot to me when Katie and Audrey are with me at races, but this one today meant a little more.
And now — there are 7 to go!

From the Carroll County Fairgrounds in Carrollton, Ohio — it’s Ohio County #80!!!
The Back to the Barn Glow Run/Walk may have been one of, if not, the weirdest and most awkward county races to date. From the get go, I knew this would be different. When I found this last fall, I couldn’t find much about it or anyone who could answer many questions about it. The alternative to this race was a Veterans’ Day 5K in November — when I already have Fayette County on the calendar for the same day. No one on their page beforehand could even could even tell me the exact distance of the run… so the clues were there ahead of time.
Knowing all this… and knowing that this had a glow theme, I decided to take Audrey because I didn’t think it would be all that bad. It was. There is nobody to direct runners on the course, there were no signs on the course to tell people where to go, and Audrey and I got turned around multiple times because everything was so spread out. I had heard that it should be roughly 2 miles… But between getting turned around and Audrey eventually needing to run/walk it… It became a 2K race for the Wade family.
Audrey and I stopped at the Dollar Tree on the way to buy glow sticks, and we both had a lot of fun with that! The trip itself was wonderful because I got to spend time with her, so by no means was it a wasted evening. 90 minutes of a drive each way seems like nothing given how much I’ve had to travel recently for races, and Audrey did very well too! Audrey did learn how talking during a race can slow us down — not that she listened to me during the race, but we had a good chat after. I asked her how much I talk to her when I race with her in a stroller, she said, “You don’t because you get out of breath.” Then she hesitated and said, “Oh.” 🤣

It was a very, VERY, early morning wake — 2 am and out the door by 3 am to travel to the furthest southern county I had left to go. As for the race itself:
I raced the 5K in Jackson on Thursday morning, took yesterday off, and decided that I was going to try and race this today. I have raced two times this close together in the last two months — when I did Paulding and Gallia on the same day in May and a few weeks ago with Champaign and Brown less than 14 hours apart. I told myself today (as I had the last two times I’d down this) that if anything starts to hurt, will shut it down. So, how’d it work out today?
That time was great! It was actually the 12th fastest 5K I’ve ever done — yes, shocker, I keep track of all my race times. The fastest 5K I’ve done since January of this year when I ran the Parkrun in 23:23. Now, I’m kicking myself for this…I went out okay I thought, then tried to pick it up a bit, but not too much. Mile 3, was a tad of an incline and I wanted to start to empty the tank with a thousand meters left. I didn’t start to empty the tank until I hit roughly 600-800 to go. I didn’t start my kick until mile 3 and saw 22:49. I knew I could be sub-24. Now I really regret not opening things up and starting my kick sooner. I’m upset at myself for that. But overall, still happy with today — especially after Thursday’s performance.
Splits were 7:28, 7:35, and 7:46. The last 0.10 miles was at 5:58 pace. I had way too much left and I’m angry at myself for that. Overall — fun race, nice course, soft shirts, and I walk away feeling healthy!
Shoutout to my friend Penny who raced her 88th and final Ohio County today!
The Magic Number is now at 9. Williams County is up next — and that also has a kids’ run so someone else will travel with me that day!!

An early morning ride down to Jackson, Ohio for the 27th Annual Freedom Fest 5K. I knew the course was going to be tough, but I don’t think I processed how hard it would be. My goal was to be smart in the first half-mile, and build from there. The problem was, the first half-mile was uphill. While I still think I held off enough, it was so hot! It was actually more humid than hot, but with zero wind to help provide any kind of a breeze. It took a toll on my body. The second goal I had today was to try to focus on getting my feet on the ground quicker.
Mile 1 was 7:42, mile 2 at 7:50, and mile 3 was 8:02. The final 0.13 miles was at 7:12 pace. I hadn’t checked the time at any point until mile 2 when a woman working the water station shouted the time out — I didn’t want to hear that because then I started to do math in my head about what I needed mile 3 to be. I got in my own head that I didn’t have anything left in the tank at that point. The final turn to come down the hill was something I was looking forward to! When it came, I was able to get up to about 6:56-7:22 pace, but couldn’t finish there. My body hurt so bad from the heat.
I ended up getting 2nd in the Male 35-39 Age Group — out of 4 people. I was excited to get a medal for it to add to the collection. I was not going to be able to go 22:08, the time that won the age group.
I felt like I got my feet on the ground quicker. My average cadence was 175 spm with a max of 190 spm. The goal is to be around 180.
I need to do a better job of racing smart. Not an ideal race for me, but hoping the next one is better. The current “Magic Number” is at 10!!
Adams County next!!!

From Mount Orab Park in Mount Orab, Ohio — the Brown County Health Department 5K is Ohio County #77!
A very quick turnaround from last night’s 4-Miler to today’s 5K! I stayed at an Airbnb in Oregonia, Ohio last night — got in around 10 pm and out the door at 5:15 am! While it was toasty again this morning, it wasn’t as humid AND it was an 8 am start. Had it of been 9 am, it would have been much hotter…because it heated up quickly.
I decided to do something stupid — and race it for a time. Just like I did last night’s 4-Miler… I raced it for a time. I did tell myself that at the first sight of pain or discomfort I would shut it down. That moment never came, I just got really tired. Mile 1, I felt like I held back enough and didn’t jump on it too early — going 7:47. Mile 2 was an increase in effort — but was a slower mile at 7:55. I started to pick it up shortly into mile 2 and felt myself starting to build some momentum, but then quickly felt the effects of last night’s race. I almost wish I had ran last night at an easy pace to race today. But the next time I go race a 5K, I’ll be fresh and will see what kind of time I can throw down. Even though I closed in 8:02 for mile 3 and the last 0.12 miles at 7:39 average pace, I was pleased given what I had put my body through in the last 13 hours.
The race itself was well organized, beautiful AND FLAT course, and people were friendly. There were no age group awards, and I know I finished 7th overall. Waiting for official results to post this weekend — it wasn’t chip tim. I’m interested to see how I did compared to other Males 30-39. I do know that the first 3-4 people across were all middle school or high school cross country and/or track runners.
The “Magic Number” is now down to 11!!

A 7 pm Friday night race in June and it was in one word — HOT!! My Garmin had it at 81 degrees at the start, but it had to be much worse than that. The humidity was awful and with several places where elevation changed, it was very rough. I didn’t think I had jumped on it too early, as I was out in 7:41 mile 1. It was mostly a slow downhill over that first mile, so that’s partly why it was faster. But then some elevation changes the next three miles proved to be tough with the heat! Miles 2 through 4 were 8:11, 8:15, and 8:04. I had the last 30 seconds of the race on an incline where I managed to find my kick and was under 7 minute pace for that time. I think I could have started my kick earlier and for that, I am disappointed in myself.
I did pass 4 guys on the course who got out ahead of me. That felt very good, considering my pace slowed after mile 1. The last one was with 400-600 meters to go. As it turned out, he was the one that I needed go pass to get top 3 in the male 26-40 age group! A third place medal came with that! 😊 Not that my time was necessarily fast (it wasn’t), but my time last year would have finished 2nd overall. Friday night, it was good for 6th place and I’m happy with that — again, considering I passed 4 people after mile 1.
It was a fun atmosphere, beautiful course, wonderful people who put it on. I did get my picture with one of the race organizers as I was picking up my packet. I shared that this was my 76th county so they asked if I’d get a picture with her and they asked me some questions — I think for their page. So that was cool!
Since Audrey and Katie stayed home for this one, I got to take “Fluffy” with me as company and to snuggle with at night (after the race).

From Farmers Bank Stadium in Pomeroy, Ohio — Meigs County is Ohio County #75! And LOTS to say about today!!
I found the Laugh to the End 5K in Meigs County and then came to find out later that the 5K was the first event of the Meigs Memorial Track & Field Challenge. Proceeds from the event go towards a scholarship fund in honor of two former Meigs High School Student-Athletes who passed away. Because the meet offered multiple events, Katie and Audrey came with me and raced today as well!
We were allowed to do four events. My first event was the 1600m Run and surprised myself by an overall time of 6:44.60. This was a full 15 seconds faster than my 1600m time from 3 summers ago when I was 15 pounds lighter and ran the 1600 up at the New London Summer Track Series. I did not think I’d be under 7 today. My splits by each 400 were 1:32.5, 1:42.0, 1:45.8, and 1:44.0. As much as I wanted to negative-split, it didn’t happen.
In the 800m Run, I went 3:06.76 — splitting 1:29.4 and 1:37.0. Again, tried to negative split and couldn’t do it. Overall though, happy with my time. For me, this is a good time.
In the 200m Dash… hahaha… I was a blistering 34.61 (very slow). I just wanted to do something different and have fun. Funny enough, I won a medal for winning my age group in that event!!
The last event was my favorite race — “Team Family” was our relay name in the 4x4 Relay. They let me run the first and last leg — Audrey ran Leg 2 and Katie, Leg 3. I went 1:23.3 in the leadoff leg and 1:26.1 in the anchor leg.
My favorite part of the day though — spending it with Katie and Audrey! In the 1600m Run, Katie beat Audrey by over minute — the only event Audrey did not PR in today. She struggled running this race and I thought it would actually be her best race. I was wrong 😞 The tears were short lived though as she won the Girls 10&U category. In the 800m Run, Audrey beat Katie by just over 50 seconds — and set a PR in the process (by 2 seconds). Audrey won the Girls 10&U category in the 800 as well — and Katie won the Girls 18-34 category in the 800! They both did the 100m Dash (Katie bested Audrey by almost a full second).
The final event was the 4x4, and our team name came from Audrey — “Team Family” is what she picked! After my leadoff leg, Audrey crushed a PR in the 400 — running a 2:03.8! That beat her previous best of 2:31 from 3 months ago! Katie ran a solid third leg, and I survived the final leg.
I asked Audrey what her favorite part of the day was, and she responded, “The 400 was my favorite part of the day because I got my best time in that (relay leg) and it was fun holding the baton.”
When we got home, Audrey was very excited for both of us to color in Meigs County on our maps with the color blue — and we were “twinsies”!!
13 to go, and two more scheduled this month!!

From Woodsfield, Ohio in Monroe County — it’s Ohio County #74!!
I had taken it easy on the legs this week — all easy running. So I decided I would race the Monroe Central FFA Glow Run 5K! It was a 9 PM start!!
At registration, the race director told me there was a decent sized hill through the cemetery… so I mentally prepared myself for that! The entire course consisted of slightly rolling hills. It wasn’t as awful as a few Southern Ohio 5K courses as far as hills go, but it was noticeable and significantly affected how I raced.
I stayed relatively relaxed in mile 1 (7:49.😎. Mile 2 was through the cemetery, had changing elevation, and I went 8:09.6. I did not look at my watch either mile because I wanted to go tonight solely based on feel. With 1000 meters to go, I began to try and empty the tank and had picked it up and was feeling strong. Then it happened. The right hamstring got soooo tight and I thought it was going to pop. I tried to gut it out for the final 350 or so meters… and I couldn’t. I told myself that if I pushed any more, I could do major damage, jeopardize my upcoming plans, and have the worst time ever driving home 2 hours and 40 minutes.
I stopped, I stretched, and no improvement. I started walking backwards for 30 seconds to stretch the hammy out. Then, another 15-20 seconds, I was able to slowly jog to the finish. After moving around slowly, I was able to even do an easy 1/2 mile warm down before stretching. Official results cannot be found as of now (1:27 am) and I’m not texting the race director now. Mile 3 was 8:43.1 and the last 0.16 miles was an average pace of 13:11/mile. I got second in the Male 31-40 age group — I think out of 4 or 5… can’t remember. All things considered at the end (plus the elevation changes), I’ll take a 26:50 and move on.
The race was nicely done, and I told the race director that some of the counties I’ve done have been “interesting” in terms of organization, race atmosphere, etc. Tonight’s race was A LOT of fun (minus the hammy issue). Glow balloons lined up along the entire course and course marshals at every turn. They took several pictures, just not posted yet.
Rest day tomorrow and going to do some work on the hammy….I can’t have that happen again. Plan calls for a 5-mile long run Sunday. We’ll see how things go tomorrow.
Up next is a bit of a different event — a Track & Field Meet in Meigs County! This one will be fun, because I’ll get to take Audrey with me!!

From Gallipolis City Park in Gallipolis, Ohio — Gallia County is Ohio County #73!!
A quick turnaround from the morning’s 8:15 am start time in Paulding County. I was home at 11:15 this morning, spent some time with Katie and Audrey (Audrey and I played Sequence for the first time today), and back out the door at 4:45 pm. It’s not that this morning’s race wasn’t fun, it was okay. Tonight was fun! I love night races! Running through the streets of Gallipolis was awesome, a lot of the course was along the streets next to the Ohio River, and there was a wonderful crowd! This may have been one of my favorite counties to be honest. The only thing that would have been better would have been if Katie and Audrey were there. I did meet a fellow 88 County Runner (Penny, an elementary teacher from Medina area) this morning and we got a picture together tonight before the race. She is at 84 after today.
I ran smarter tonight, though my time was 17 seconds slower. To be honest, I was happier with my run tonight — I ended up negative-splitting it…. 8:01, 7:56, 7:55, and 6:56 pace the last 0.11 miles. I ended up running past the finish because I had the course short by 0.04 miles. I did have to watch my steps carefully the last two miles and I had to hold back only a tad because of it — I didn’t have lights on to see parts of the road. I still would have been slower than this morning though. I ended up bringing home a nice medal for getting third in the Male 36-45 age group! I was happy with that until I realized the winner of the overall female division was a 10-year old girl — who went 21:21. That’s insane!!!!
I also found out that Gallia County is pronounced (gal-ya) and Gallipolis City is (Gal-pole-iss) and that the French settled the land in 1790.
As I sit here at home finishing this post, Charlie has not left my side and is asleep on my arm!! Right now, 73 counties have been raced and I now have 15 to go!! Monroe County (for a night race) at the end of the month!
