Now that we have colder temperatures, keep in mind that we may have to cancel lessons to keep our riders, horses, and instructor comfortable! Unless there is wind or a lot of mud, generally we can keep riding until it gets to freezing temps as long as everyone is dressed for it. Kerrits, irideon, Tough Rider, and other companies make winter riding tights. Gloves are important, but make sure you still can use your hands. Warm socks, vests, coats, layers, thinner fleece ear warmers, neck gaiters…keep your clothing close-fitting but still free-moving for safety.

Be ready for ba****ck lessons!

Congratulations to Sara Edwards who was named Educator of the Year at this morning’s Hopkins County Farm City Breakfast! Ms. Edwards works hard to make ag education accessible and interesting to all of her students.

We have a couple new faces at SHEC! Please welcome Sarah Edwards and her gelding, Digger. Sarah will be boarding Digger, her reining horse, with us, and will be helping out from time to time. Sarah is an Ag teacher at Madisonville North Hopkins. We are looking forward to getting to know them better!

Digger is deaf, so please keep that in mind when you are out at the barn.

With most everyone out of town this week, it seems like a good time for horses to be off too. We were at 143 today. We’ll monitor the situation and hopefully conditions will improve for when lessons resume. Stay safe everyone!

NEW POLICY - PLEASE READ

For the time being, if riders are mounted and hear an approaching helicopter, riders are to dismount and riders and instructors will create as safe environment for the horses and riders as possible. After several minutes, riders may re-mount and continue lessons.

We have a Big Rivers Electric power line running across the property. Today, while checking the lines, the helicopter dipped excessively low and spooked all of the animals. The new policy will hopefully keep everyone safer, as we often have medevac helicopters pass by frequently, although much higher. It is quite possible that the horses will be more reactive to any air traffic for a little while.
