Eight days ago, David McClung of Olathe and his son Dennis McClung set off on a journey to complete the 17,598-foot climb to the South Base Camp of Mount Everest. From Longs Peak, Colorado to Mount Rainier, Washington, Kilian dreamed of a single, impossible line across the American West, and didn’t stop until it touched every 14,000‑foot summit in between.

This was never about the numbers. The point was the country between them: the quiet miles, the shared ridges, the storms that make you small, and the simple goal to get there under his own power, running and riding the spaces in between.

31 days and 72 summits later, Rainier has been climbed. The line is now complete.

Since 2014, CFI has tracked annual usage on Colorado's fourteener trails to better understand hiking patterns. After hitting a record low of 260,000 hiker use days in 2023, foot traffic on our high peaks has bounced back. The reopening of the Decalibron Loop and revised calculations for Mt. Blue Sky drove most of this uptick.
