Yoga was not always something Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar simply accepted.

What changed?
He experienced what the practice could do.

“The real progress in my practice and the acceptance of yoga came through the discovery of yoga as a healing & holistic health therapy.”
— Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar

There is an important distinction here.
Sometimes we begin yoga because we are told it is good for us.

We learn the poses.
We follow the instructions.
We try to practise correctly.

But belief can remain intellectual.
Then experience begins to teach us.
Perhaps the body becomes a little more stable.
A movement that was difficult becomes possible.

Breathing becomes easier.
Pain, fatigue or stiffness is understood differently.
The nervous system settles.

Gradually, yoga is no longer something we are merely “doing”.
We begin to understand why we practice.

For Guruji, healing became a doorway.

Not healing understood only as removing illness, but as discovering that yoga could work with the human being as a whole:
Body.
Breath.
Mind.
Awareness.

Perhaps practice becomes meaningful when experience reveals something that explanation alone cannot.

What made yoga become real for you?
Was there a moment when practice changed from something you did into something you trusted?

‘Lord Krishna says: ‘Whatever being is endowed with beauty, goodness, glory and might, know that it has sprung from a spark of my splendour .’ When the heart is filled with a unique feeling of joy and harmony, there is beauty. It unifies and brings understanding between all the senses of perception, the mind, the intelligence and the soul, and creates a taste and flavour in the art. The flavour and taste differ according to the beholder. First it is felt indistinctly, then it gives delight to the senses, and finally it appears with clarity. In beauty there is balance, order, form, symmetry and design. Through lifelong loving effort, new ideas of harmony and balance spring forth from the soul for perfect ex*****on, expressing at once serenity and divinity. The artist loses his personal identity and becomes a universal entity. This is ‘beauty in action’. Art glows from the immortal flame of the artist’s soul, expressing itself through his body, senses and mind.’

Your teacher says extend.
Not simply stretch.

What is the difference?

In an āsana, it is easy to feel one part pulling and think that more sensation means more extension.

But extension asks for something different.
The action has to travel through the whole body.

From the root of the leg to the foot.
From the shoulder to the fingertips.
From one side of the body to the other.

Not one part pulling harder while another part becomes dull.

Guruji put it precisely:
“Each muscle has to be measured…
how one has to balance each and every part of our body,
that is known as self-study.”
— B.K.S. Iyengar, 1984 Barbican Centre demonstration

Measured.
Balanced.

Not simply pulled.
A stretch can remain merely physical.
Extension asks intelligence to enter the action.

The body extends,
but awareness must extend with it.

It is not only about taking a muscle farther.
It is about making more of the body participate —
and more of the body known.

So the next time your teacher says extend,
and your first instinct is to pull harder —

pause.

Ask:
Where is the action beginning?
Where is it travelling?
And where has my attention stopped?

What does “extend” ask of you that “stretch” does not?

We read every response.

Mastery is not trying harder.

Prashantji puts it plainly:
“The mastery of asana

It is not constantly struggling;
it is maturity.
Maturity must be there;
cessation of effort must be there.”
— Sri Prashant S. Iyengar

We grow up thinking mastery means more effort.

Grip harder.
Push further.
Try again.

But in āsana, maturity can reveal something very different.
The beginner must work.
The work is real.

Yet over time, the work can stop feeling like a fight.
The pose settles.
The effort becomes absorbed.
The body begins to understand what is being asked of it.

Patañjali points toward this in Yoga Sūtra 2.47:
prayatna-śaithilya
—the relaxation of effort.

This does not mean becoming passive.

The legs may still be active.
The spine may still be extending.
Attention is still present.

But unnecessary struggle begins to fall away.

Effort becomes quieter.
Steadiness remains.

Perhaps this is one sign of maturity in practice:
not that we do less,
but that we no longer have to force so much.

The next time you stay in a familiar pose, notice:
Where are you still struggling?
And where has the pose already learned to hold itself?
What āsana has taught you that mastery can feel more like release than force?

Đôi mắt bạn đã mở to, đôi tay vẫn trống rỗng,

Cụm “for such a time as this” rất đặc biệt.

“Bandhas are essential in the practice of pränăyăma. If you cannot do Sálamba Sarvängäsana and Halãsana, well, you cannot do Jälandhara Bandha. In Sälamba Sarväńgăsana there is a natural Jalandhara Bandha (a chinlock) If you cannot do Sälamba Sirşäsana you cannot do Uddiyăna Bandha, because the moment you do Sälamba Sirşäsana, there is a natural Uddiyăna Bandha. These bandha are essential factors in prănăyäma. In-order to save stress on the brain and acceleration of heartbeats (as in jogging), you need to do Jälandhara Bandha by bringing the head down to rest on the notch of the chest. Strain should not be felt in pränayāma and the heartbeats should be very rhythmic and slow. Uddiyãna Bandha is the gripping of the lower abdomen. So too with Müla Bandha, in asanas like Ürdhva Dhanurăsana, Dwi Pada Viparita Dandăsana, Kapotăsana, Viścikasana, Chakrabandhasana and Mülabandhāsana, one leams Müla Bandha wherein the a**s is contracted and gripped up to the a**l sphincter muscles. It needs to be done in pränayăma, so that the energy does not dissipate in an untrained body. These are examples of why asana is said to be so important before pränäyăma is started.”
