We hit a whale on our livestream sailing from Tonga to Fiji!! šŸ‹ As soon as we were safely in Fiji, I geared up and dove under Some Tuesday to see how bad it was. Come on the dive with me and let’s have a look. Also, what about the poor whale?!? I cover it all in this short vid.

We were moored right next to the Conrad's overwater bungalows in Bora Bora - five to twelve thousand dollars a night. Our mooring was about fifty bucks.

"Meghan said it best: our boat is our overwater bungalow. For 1% of the cost of the one on land. (Please just stop there and don't do the math on the full amortized cost of buying and sailing the boat!!)"

Then we sailed on to Maupiha'a, and it couldn't have been more different. The postcard and the silence.

The new Captain's Log is up - the long version, with everything that didn't make the video: https://www.sometuesday.com/the-log/bora-bora-by-sailboat-maupihaa?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=log_borabora

Dear Jabsco - for the love of all that is holy, why would you use slotted screws on your toilets in a world with Torx, hex, and even square-drive??? It makes the boat yoga SO much more difficult… 😔

Serious Robinson Crusoe vibes!! A rope swing, white sand and not another soul on Uonukuhahake Island in Tonga's Ha'apai group. Uninhabited, and we had it to ourselves :-)

Where is Some Tuesday? We just arrived at Nawi Island in Fiji!! The passage from Pangai in Tonga's Ha'apai group was about 405 nautical miles - and yes, it's the one with the whale. We wanted to be tucked in before cyclone season starts November 1, and Fiji is home until April 2027. And the best part: my sons, Hank and Carter, are flying out for Christmas. First time we'll have seen them in over a year!! The boat reports her position every 10 minutes, so you can follow along right here: https://www.sometuesday.com/whereissometuesday/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=where_is_st

We hit a whale. But she's OK - and so are we!!

Halfway through our livestream from Tonga to Fiji, a pod of whales crossed right in front of us. One surfaced well off our starboard bow, swam across our path and hit our port bow. It's all on the livestream.

We checked the bulkheads and the bilges - bone dry, thanks be to God! I sent a pan-pan, and the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre checked in with us every six hours for the rest of the passage. Two other boats in our group hit whales this season, and one of them sank, so we took it VERY seriously.

We hope the whale is OK too :-( We're now safe and sound at Nawi Island in Savusavu, Fiji.

Watch the moment it happens (it jumps right to the whale): https://www.sometuesday.com/whale/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=whale_strike

Whale strike update: we are safe and the whale is OK (but she’ll be sore for a couple weeks!) We will arrive in Savusavu Fiji tomorrow morning. Meghan and I will shoot a video telling the whole story, but for now we wanted everyone to know we’re safe. Live tracking link in comments.
