Totem Pole competition is in full swing at the New Hampshire Table Tennis Club. A Totem Pole List was generated estimating the ranking of 45 players at the NHTTC. A player may challenge another player up to 3 positions higher and if that player wins, they take that player's position, and the losing player moves down one position. If the player that challenges lose, no positions are changed. It's fun and you get to measure your improvement in play. Try it!

NHTTC got into the holiday spirit with its first Margie's Magical Christmas Party on December 7th. Many people dressed for the occasion with their ugly Christmas sweaters, vests, ties and t-shirts. Many people also brought a dish to share including lasagna, sausage slices in grape jelly, pizza, Charcuterie and Cheese Board, dried fish and squid, chicken salads and Birch water from the Ukraine, complements of Serge. Deserts were plentiful and consisted of a Christmas Tree Chocolate Cake, cupcakes with chocolate frosting and Derek's Tira Mi Su. Yummy! Professor Bruce won the History of Table Tennis Quiz, while Bob won the First-to-Five Contest and then teamed with Joanne and Margie to win the Triples Tournament. Fun time was had by all. Thanks to Margie for organizing and getting us all in the holiday spirit. Merry Christmas. See comments for the food.

NHTTC is a magical place. A little over a year ago, a new player (Arnon) showed up at the club to play table tennis. He was a pretty good player and said he was from Israel. A few weeks later, a women (Leslie) showed up at the club and told me she wanted to learn to play better table tennis, so she could beat her college-age son. After I gave her a few coaching lessons, Arnon stepped-in and took my place, practicing with Leslie every week thereafter. When we played doubles at the club, Arnon would always want to be Leslie's partner. Who would have guessed, a year later they would be holding a marriage certificate. Love is in the air at NHTTC.

So simple and so basic. One of my coaches would stop the practice if he saw my paddle drift up. Should be a straight line from your elbow to the paddle's edge. Less vibration and a more solid hit. Be consistent!

We have a new coach! Marcio Sampaio, winner of the Big Ball Tourney, has agreed to provide private table tennis lessons to our club players to help them improve their game. Marcio is from Portugal and has been coaching at his home club, CE Arrifes, for over 7 years and has his Level 2 table tennis coaching license.

Private coaching lessons at NHTTC will begin April 27th with the first lesson starting at 6:00 pm and the last lesson starting at 9:00 pm. Cost is $25 for a half hour and $50 for a full hour, payable to Marcio at the end of the lesson. To schedule a private lesson with Marcio, you can text him at 978-871-8962 or email Bill Swift at [email protected] or sign-up at the club that night.

The best way to improve your game is to take weekly table tennis lessons, since your skill level is 80% proper stroke mechanics and your paddle (blade and rubber) is only 20%. Try a private lesson with Marcio to eliminate those bad habits and gain new skills.

BIG BALL Tourney Results. Marcio Sampaio defeated Bruce Paster 3-1 in the finals. The semi-finals had Marcio defeating a previous tourney champion Abdullah Saif Nauman 2-1 and in the other semi-final Bruce upset Kevin Pho, also a previous tourney champion, 2-0 to advance. A total of 17 players took the BIG BALL challenge and enjoyed long rallies and socializing with their table tennis friends. Most had never played with the 44 mm ball and quickly realized they needed to adapt their game strategy to win. Be sure to look in the comments section below for additional photos. A shout out to Serge for capturing the event on his camera.
