"Mark, I stand by my endorsement 1000%. Here's a little story from this past weekend: I've been chasing this venue for 4 years since it was built. It's stunning, expensive (which means it's my ideal client), with great owners. They have a preferred vendor list which I really wanted to get on. This weekend, I finally got to play there for a couple. The wedding was average/below average. Older couple, older crowd (almost nobody below 30) which made getting and keeping the dance floor full a challenge.

I found out during the week that the owners of the venue were guests at the wedding as they not only knew the couple but were good friends with them. The couple's music selection was extensive and 'not good' though I did talk them off the ledge of requiring me to play ONLY their songs. Even with us playing 'the good stuff' dancing was hit/miss all night long. I was thinking this was NOT the way I wanted to represent myself to this venue/couple.

However, as the night was progressing, I turned over the board to my assistant to take a little break and who approaches me but the husband of the couple that owns it. He sat down next to me outside and reached out his hand. "You sir are one of the best M/C's I have ever seen come through these doors. You're ability to work the crowd, make them laugh, make them feel, and respond in the moment is unparalleled." I of course thanked him profusely and said how much I respected his venue, the friendliness of the staff, the acoustics (which were amazing) and how well thought out the space was and how it would be an honor to be included on their PV list. He said, "gotta talk to the wife......she's the boss in that department."

Feeling complimented, but also feeling like I'd have to start over and not sure if she felt the same way, I found a time at the end of the night with a pocket full of my business cards to say goodnight (we had torn down and I was doing my final sweep and venue staff thank yous). I thanked her and she said, "You were incredibly professional tonight. You and your staff kept in touch with my staff, cleaned up after yourselves, tore down quickly, and you are crazy good on the mic."

Bottom line, I have made the PV list at this amazing venue and can't wait to go back. And, I did it at a wedding that wasn't a blowout wedding with a packed floor all night. But, I did it because of the skills I learned/mastered in The MarBecca Method! I so wish I could be there in a couple of weeks to take the gold workshop (I WILL DO IT SOON). I also want to do love story workshops."

I read about problems in the various DJ groups every day. And all I can think of (most of the time) is, "it isn't necessary." Truly, most of the problems I read about are completely avoidable, but it takes a different approach to business, and client or audience interaction. That's why, in my "Getting What You're Worth" presentation and , I talk a LOT about having a REALationship with clients and audiences. Most problems can be avoided with this one simple change in your approach.

Mark Ferrell has begun every single workshop since 2005 with the Beatles song, "All You Need Is Love". Most workshop attendees probably don't notice it, but it's an important part of every workshop. It's a reminder of the importance Love plays in being excellent in this profession.

There's one line that always stands out to us: "Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time." This is what every workshop is about. Each participant, whether they know it or not, is there to unlearn the fake, phony, manufactured, copied act they've been using and discovering who they are as a true and honest performing artist. They are literally learning how to be themselves on stage — without the facade, yet with the professionalism required for the job. The gimmicks disappear. The routines fade away. And a professional entertainer emerges.
It is truly a beautiful sight and sound to behold.

The thing that's frustrating to me as a speaker, trainer, and coach to DJs for many years is that most DJs are still stuck in "routine" mode instead of "performance" mode when it comes to MC skills.

Most DJs still think that all you need is a script or the proper steps to do the job. This makes DJs sound amateur because they are limited to reciting or repeating a routine. Anyone can do that.

A performance draws from a different well. It's not the words or the steps that define a performance. Like music is to a DJ, words/steps are just tools a professional MC uses to communicate and connect with an audience. And how those tools are used is what makes the difference between amateur and professional.

As the most-attended workshops for DJs in the world over the longest period of time with proven results, I can confidently say that WILL open your eyes to new possibilities and improve everything you do on stage.

I love taking someone who has never been in a performance workshop and shaping them into an entertainment professional. Most mobile DJs have no formal training. That's a fact. Most have learned from other DJs who have learned from other DJs — all without an entertainment background, i.e. training or employment. So when they attend a and are informed of entertainment standards and then have the opportunity to practice them for the first time ever, it's a beautiful thing to watch. The change is remarkable.

I've been training DJs for a long time. That's the other part of the equation. It's one thing to "know" information and "parrot" it, and quite another to have the experience and knowledge to teach or train others. Knowing what to say and when to say it based on the individual is an art and a talent unto itself. How to give guidance and bring out the best in others is key to leading a workshop.

When choosing a workshop, consider the real-world experience of the trainer. Consider the background of the trainer — did they work in the entertainment industry? In what capacity? How long? Were they successful in your field of endeavor? Consider the people they've trained and ask their opinions of that training.

RRuss Powell"I was the Master of Ceremonies for a wedding last night where half the family flew in from Denmark. When discussing details with the couple, the bride mentioned in passing, we’re doing a waltz as we’re Danish on my mom’s side. Besides that, they put zero (big emphasis on zero) Danish music in their playlists. I wasn’t quite expecting all the Danes, yet I was prepared. How?
Because MMark Ferrell& RRebecca Ferrellemphasize knowing cultural traditions and being an actual master of those ceremonies with the ability to transfer that knowledge in a way that is entertaining, brings emotional meaning, and connects the audience to the couple.
And it’s a good thing I have studied a lot of the Danish traditions. As guests arrived I mentally switched gears, quickly looked up a couple of phrases in Danish and then greeted them with a “Velkommen”! They had the bells, kissed under the table, and incorporated other traditions that I explained to guests. We all had a blast and I got compliments all night on my mic work.
