Mammoth Fly Fishing Adventures Guided Fly Fishing Adventures Welcome Fly Anglers,

My name is Harry Blackburn and my passion is fly-fishing.

I am 55 years young, a native Californian and I have been guiding in the Eastern Sierras for over 27 years. I have an in extensive background coaching and guiding the ski slopes, streams and lakes of the Eastside of the Sierras. I started working as a guide in the late 1980’s for the Trout Fly, under the ownership of John Irons. Then I started The Eastside Guide Service with my good friends Tom Ap

ril, Mike Peters and Kevin Petersen. I have worked for Mammoth Mountain Ski Area for 32 years. I was a ski instructor and now I coach and manage the Mammoth Mountain Junior Ski Team during the winter season. I have guided for the famed “Arcularius Ranch” on the Upper Owens River and for the “Hot Creek Ranch” on the gin clear waters of Hot Creek using only dry flies. I am available to guide the waters from Bridgeport to Bishop. I have fly-fished the crystal clear saltwater of the Bahamas, sight fished in the Yucatan for Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit and Snook and swung flies for Steelhead on the famed streams of the Pacific Northwest. I have pioneered & perfected fly-fishing methods on Crowley Lake, with Chironomids under an indicator. I enjoy tying my own flies and have a unique understanding of the cycles of our local insects. Whether you are a beginner to the art of casting a fly rod and catching fish on the fly or a seasoned veteran, I have the ability to make your fly-fishing adventure successful.

March 1, 2021 will begin California’s Department of Fish & Wildlife new Sport Fishing Regulations. It is a good idea to take a look online to see the new changes before you wet a line. It is my understanding that there will be limited if any paper copies. It is in your best interest to read the signs posted and do your research! There are some changes that will surprise you!

The Sierra general trout season ends today Nov 15. The middle of Fall has been great. I hope you had a fantastic season. There are still area waters that will remain open year round but it is best to study your Ca fisheries regulations and know your land marks before wetting a line on Nov 16th.

The aspen leaves are nearing peak color in the highest elevations and the display of colors continue migrating down the valleys. The days have been warm and the mornings on the brisk side! There is a significant weather change coming and the highest peaks may get a dusting of snow and the valleys could see some much needed precipitation. Temperatures will depart some 10-15 degrees by the weekend giving it a more Fall like feeling. The water temperatures continue to drop on the area lakes and streams. There are insects hatching and the trout are actively feeding. As temperatures continue to fall and the days get shorter the Brown trout and Brook trout prepare to spawn! The flows have increased on the Upper Owens and decreased on the Lower Owens River below Pleasant Valley reservoir. All other area lakes and streams are in late summer drought conditions. We are currently feeling the affects of a very warm and dry year!

Smoke from the Creek Fire is still affecting the area and could plague the region on and off until the first major winter storm blankets the high country with snow smoothers the Creek Fire out! The Inyo National Forest has re-opened its land with some areas still under restricted access along with the highest fire restrictions remain in place throughout the Forest! No camp fires are allowed unless you are in a designated campground. You may not have a campfire if you are depersed camping! A few campground have closed for the season already The gate to The Devils Postpile and Reds Meadow will remain closed until next season and the back country wilderness is still closed due to the Creek Fire. Anyone planing to visit the Eastern Sierras should pay close attention to the weather and stay informed on local orders pertaining to Covid-19, Fire information and restrictions! if your fishing in the area some area streams and Crowley Lake fall under special regulations. Make sure you know them before wetting a line! It could be a costly mistake!
Be Safe and have fun!

The fishing on Crowley Lake (LADWP owned land) lately has been pretty darn good despite the dense smoke blanketing the area with the poor unhealthy air quality from the Creek Fire on the western side of the Sierras spilling over into the eastern slope communities up and down the valley for the last two weeks. The air quality is meant to improve in the next 5 days overall in the region. The latest forecast is calling for northeast winds for the next few days so the smoke should remain out of the area at least for the short term. The Inyo National Forest remains closed to all activities including camping, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting until Oct 1st. The USFS will evaluate conditions and might make some changes in the coming days but as of now fire danger conditions within the forest remains extremely high and resources have been stretched thin with the large wildfires currently burning throughout California.

The nights have cooled off days remain warm. You can see the changes in the aspen leaves starting to accelerate hopefully the forest will open up shortly and everyone can enjoy this great time of year! if your making plans to camp and visit be sure to check before you leave that that particular area you plan to visit is open and know what fire restrictions are in place!

Early August fishing has proven to be productive on some of the area waters. The weather has been warm and breezy in the afternoons. Temperature cool off in the evenings. It has been very busy in the Mammoth area. In some respects it could end up being one of the busiest summers the town has seen! Be respectful of your surroundings, leave no trace, and use some good common etiquette.

The high country is locked into a summer pattern. The mornings are cool then by mid day the heat is on. Relief comes mid afternoon in the form of a pretty good breeze. Most area streams are low and clear! The meadow grasses are starting drying out and the hoppers are abundant in some area and become very active midday. Crowley lake is still very full and the damsel flies have made their appearance. The perch fry are starting to become visible as the first algea bloom of the season on Crowley lake is in its final throw and the lake is about to turn over and the water should clear up to some degree.
No sign yet of the monsoon moisture but thunderstorms could start to be a factor in the coming weeks! Its been very busy on the area waters and the fish are starting to get educated and selective. Time to bring your A game!
