Know Before You Go #3: Inshore Holes

Ever be standing in waist-deep water and suddenly find yourself chest deep?

You may have stepped into an inshore hole.

Inshore holes are deeper pockets of water that form along the shoreline as waves and currents move sand around. They can be difficult to spot and may surprise swimmers, bodyboarders, and young children.

✅ Pay attention to changes in water depth
✅ Enter the water slowly and watch your footing
✅ Keep a close eye on younger swimmers
✅ Ask a lifeguard about local conditions

At Zuma Beach, inshore holes can form and disappear as sandbars shift throughout the season.

Know Before You Go #2: Longshore Currents

Ever enter the water in front of your towel and come out far down the beach?

That's often caused by a longshore current—water moving sideways along the shoreline.

✅ Check your position frequently
✅ Use lifeguard towers and landmarks as reference points
✅ Keep an eye on younger swimmers
✅ If you drift, simply walk back up the beach

Know Before You Go: Rip Currents

Did you know rip currents account for approximately 80% of ocean rescues?

❌ Myth: Undertow pulls you under
✅ Fact: Rip currents pull you away from shore

A rip current is a narrow channel of water moving away from shore. The danger isn't being pulled underwater—it's panic and exhaustion from trying to swim directly against the current.

If caught in a rip current:
• Stay calm
• Float if needed
• Swim parallel to shore
• Then angle back to the beach
• Wave for help if you need assistance
