Alyssa Malley () took top spot in the Ray Miller 50k. Her performance is impressive in its own right, but even more so considering that she balances 24-hour work shifts as a dedicated medical professional while still consistently training in the humidity of Hawaii. Alyssa cruised through the 6.000 feet of climbing and descending in Southern California in a stellar time of 5:27. Coach isn’t surprised at all and is positive there is even more to come from Alyssa!

Westi Haughey ran a 2:12 half marathon a few weekends ago, smashing her PR by 6 minutes. She raced the Bird in Hand Half, a hilly course in Pennsylvania, in the heart of Amish Country.

Training and living in southern Oregon, Westi had to endure smoky conditions the last few weeks leading up to race day, which resulted in her having to do her last few long runs on the treadmill.

Westi works as a full time goat farmer and is also mother of two, so her ability to find the time and energy to train is commendable and impressive. Coach .brill is excited to keep helping her improve, and hopefully some more PRs are on the horizon for Westi!

If you have followed the Trails and Tarmac instagram for a while it's likely you've seen a few posts about He's been with T&T a long time. We'd like to revisit his a bit of journey. In 2016 Colton ran his first 100k at Waldo, a classic trail event in the Central Oregon cascades. He finished this race in just over 12 hours, still young in his ultra career and learning how to handle running a really long way in the mountains. He ran Waldo again in 2017 with a massive improvement finishing in just over 10 hours and sharing the overall win. Colton has had many great performances in the ensuing years, but Waldo has always had his heart. We finally got the chance to toe the line again, fit, healthy and ready to make some waves. Colton ran off the front early in the race this year, never looking back and charging to the overall win in 9 hours and 33 minutes putting him into the top 10 all time finishers ever, among some of the biggest names in the sport over the past decade.
Colton's journey reminds us of a quote from the cult classic Once a Runner. "You don't become a runner by winning the morning workout. The only true way is to marshal the ferocity of your ambition over the course of many days, weeks, months, and if you can finally come to accept it, years". This truth is one we can often forget. There are no shortcuts in long distance running.
Congrats Colton on a terrific race and milestone this past weekend, with many more to come.

The WyEast Howl 50k is a terrific course in classic beautiful Pacific Northwest terrain around Mt Hood. This kind of terrain is where thrives, both in terms of her physical abilities, but also her mental sweet spot. She had a short turn around after some hard fought races at Broken Arrow last month, but there was no doubt that she was in good condition for a big effort over 50km in the mountains of Oregon.
Julie ran at the front of the women's race from the start. She had a gap from around mile 8 until near the end on the final major climb when coming up behind her was the second place female trying to charge her down. Usually when a runner gets caught in the late stages of an ultra they are going to get beat, at least more often than not. But Julie had something left and put up a good hard fight, surging to stay ahead up the climb and on the final short descent, winning the race by just 1 minute in a time of 4:32! It's not often when the top spot at these races is decided by such a small margin, but it does make it all the more sweet. Congrats Julie on such a strong run, and more importantly on never giving up!

This weekend TWO Trails and Tarmac athletes raced the McKenzie River 50k! completed her first 50k ever and was able to take some tips from ultra veteran who got out of her comfort zone by racing a “shorter” race compared to the 100k+ distances she’s done recently. It’s our joy as coaches to be able to connect athletes with each other and even better when they can share miles and smiles!

David Hedges took Max King nearly all the way to the line last weekend at the Breckneck Trail Marathon. Not too many people can say this. Below is what his coach had to say. Congrats on some extremely impressive and gusty racing!
build up for Breakneck was very impressive. He was able to put in quite a bit of volume while also adding some dedicated workouts that gave him a level of fitness that he hasn't had before. With the ultimate goal of this year being UTMB, this was a perfect first training block that should set him up very well for the summer. I think David is going to surprise a lot of people in 2022.

Bill Cottrell

Bill had a quick turn around from a 50k PR at the Chuckanut 50k in March. It was a tall order to knock a few minutes off his 3:03 from CIM last December, but he rose to the challenge and snuck under the 3 hour barrier with a new PR of 2:59:36!

Connor Cushman

What a way to make a marathon debut! It's one thing to put in the work and consistency, but to then knock the first marathon out of the park is something that doesn't happen every day. 2:24:06 official time and 5th place overall is a job well done!

Kevin Ward
After trading in the vert and mud for track workouts and threshold work, Kevin set out on a new type of challenge. The result was a massive 25 minute marathon PR with a time of 3:21!
andherboys and
These two gals both had the same goal in mind when they toed the line at the Eugene marathon. Break 3 hours. It would be a large PR for both of them, but that is exactly what they did, Natalie ran 2:53:55 and Jordan ran 2:57:01. Such a legendary day!

Alli just ran the Boston marathon two weeks before Eugene, (ok 13 days). She PR'd at Boston. It was an audacious move to try and then come back and set another PR, this time in the Half at Eugene, but low and behold Alli totally smoked it, running 1:33:51 for a 4+ min PB and a qualifier for the NYC marathon next year!

All in all 6 T&T runners ran Eugene and all six ran PRs. Hard work, consistency, and a bit of faith in one's own abilities go a long way. Congrats to each of you on your incredible runs.

Running 30 miles through wild country solo in new terrain is a daunting task for pretty much everyone. Ok, I'll go even further, it's more than daunting for almost everyone, and for all kinds of valid reasons. There are wild animals, potentially unknown people, rocks to trip over, rivers to fall into, and often zero cell service. These elements of the unknown and self efficacy in wild environments are just as much part of the appeal as they are a deterrent, but there is no way around that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach the night before setting out on any such adventure.
This past weekend T&T runner Kelly decided to set out to run the full Klickitat Trail, 30 miles point to point in the beautiful semi-arid landscape of far Northern Central Oregon. She got a friend to drop her off at the far and then she was on her own to make it back to her car on the other side. Once she began the rhythmic act of setting one foot in front of the other, nearly all of that fear and trepidation faded away, replaced by the sounds of rivers flowing and a chorus of frogs pleased to be alive in the world.
Kelly finished the full route in 5:44 and had a great time doing it! As a side benefit she also set the women's @ in the process. I don't think Kelly was that concerned about the record part, for her it was more about doing something that was a little scary, and that would help build her confidence for more adventures like this one down the road. Mission accomplished! Awesome stuff Kelly, Here's to more where that came from. You can read Kelly's report on the FKT website, just google Klickitat Trail FKT.

This weekend was able to have a bittersweet end to her training block with a 1:54 half marathon (with over 700’ of climbing)! Brandy has amazed her coach with her resiliency in training and life. She recovered from a femur fracture requiring surgery in September 2021, and then within 2 weeks of the Bend Half Marathon (what was supposed to be a “training race” on her way toward bigger goals), she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Brandy is taking a hiatus from training while undergoing treatment, but we are so proud to have her on the team and continue cheering for her on the path ahead.

Todd Simpson .simpson raced the 1/2 marathon this weekend at Run The Rock and placed 3rd in a time of 1:48:05!

As you can see from the new born baby under his sweatshirt, he just became a Dad!

He thanks his wife for making it possible for him to go race with a new baby! Thanks for the reminder Todd. We should all thank our supporters and families for being amazing and helping us have fun on the trails!

is a busy person. His job has him working a lot most of the time. It was with great excitement that his coach found out earlier this year that Nic would be getting to take some time away from work and we'd have ample opportunity to train for something longer!
Nic lives in Switzerland and is from there originally as well. He came up with an idea to run a route in Northern Switzerland called Fricktaler Hohenweg. It's 36 miles with over 6,000ft of vertical gain on a point to point course rolling through hills and towns along the way. What was truly special about this run was that the route started at the Brewery which Nic's Grandfather founded and cruised through his hometown on all the trails where he fell in love with running.
Training was not without its hiccups, between a new baby, getting sick, and just getting back into ultra shape, Nic had his work cut out for him, but he was not deterred. With great vim and vigor he took to the course and piece by piece he worked through it all with high spirits, finishing in a time of just under 7.5 hours. It was special for us to see Nic return to running this longer distance again and in such a meaningful way! Congrats Nic .Way to never take no for an answer!

A couple of weeks ago the was held outside of Seattle. This race is unique in a number of ways. Its held in a beautifully lush PNW forest and very very tough, with approx. 8,000ft of gain and loss over just 25 miles. What's more interesting is that the course incorporates four distinct loops with a different climb and the same descent on each loop. Runners get to choose the order in which they do each loop, so you never know exactly where you are compared to the other runners.
Before the race Julie and her coach debated the merits of sticking with the competition or making a plan for the most efficient way to tackle the course itself. It became clear that having a well defined plan and running to Julie's strengths was going to be the best call. Saving the steepest climbs for last since Julie can hike so well, even if she's tired!
We knew any time under 5 hours was going to take a good day ,but sure enough, right on cue, Julie finished all of the loops in 4:54, taking third place woman and sixth overall. It was an impressive run objectively, and maybe more importantly it was a huge mental success. Julie continually asked her body to keep working for her, and from start to finish mind and body worked together beautifully! Congrats Julie, what a way to send out your 2021 trail racing season!
