Running 30 miles through wild country solo in new terrain is a daunting task for pretty much everyone. Ok, I'll go even further, it's more than daunting for almost everyone, and for all kinds of valid reasons. There are wild animals, potentially unknown people, rocks to trip over, rivers to fall into, and often zero cell service. These elements of the unknown and self efficacy in wild environments are just as much part of the appeal as they are a deterrent, but there is no way around that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach the night before setting out on any such adventure.
This past weekend T&T runner Kelly decided to set out to run the full Klickitat Trail, 30 miles point to point in the beautiful semi-arid landscape of far Northern Central Oregon. She got a friend to drop her off at the far and then she was on her own to make it back to her car on the other side. Once she began the rhythmic act of setting one foot in front of the other, nearly all of that fear and trepidation faded away, replaced by the sounds of rivers flowing and a chorus of frogs pleased to be alive in the world.
Kelly finished the full route in 5:44 and had a great time doing it! As a side benefit she also set the women's @ in the process. I don't think Kelly was that concerned about the record part, for her it was more about doing something that was a little scary, and that would help build her confidence for more adventures like this one down the road. Mission accomplished! Awesome stuff Kelly, Here's to more where that came from. You can read Kelly's report on the FKT website, just google Klickitat Trail FKT.
