We are proud to announce that the Club recently hosted Vinny Lazzara, Senior Course Rater for Golfweek and writer for Top100GolfCourses.com.
Following his visit on April 3, 2026, Vinny awarded our course a prestigious 4.5 out of 5 rating. We wanted to share his glowing assessment of our club with you in its entirety.
“ "Under the radar" is an understatement. The design feature that stands out the most after a visit to Mahopac are the stunning green complexes. The putting surfaces and their accompanying bunkers were originally sited by Devereau Emmett long ago and enhanced by Ken Dye in 2002 in a links like style.
The front nine sits on the crest of a hill above Lake Mahopac. Because of the tilt of the land, the shape of your tee ball will most likely determine whether your ball holds the fairway and many of the greens. One's shot making skills will most likely determine their ability to score on this wonderful piece of terrain.
As one approaches the 11th tee they will notice a change of sorts. The sequence of holes 11 through 13 and 17 appear different from the previous 10 due to the introduction of a small, fast flowing brook and some wetlands. What was once a tee shot that could stray a bit now puts a premium on accuracy. Scoring on this arrangement is based on your ability to avoid the water.
After putting out on 13, the routing takes you across Wixon Pond Road and up and back down 50 feet of elevation. The long view out over the course from the 16th tee is something to behold. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the putting surfaces themselves.
According to the Club, the course plays hard and fast and that includes the greens. The ground game is alive and well at Mahopac and the greens stand out as the true protectors of par on this classic layout.”
This high praise from a respected voice in the golf community is a tribute to the dedication to Jon Feruccio and his maintenance team and the membership that calls this "classic layout" home.
