Control that Horse!

Concho Hills is not the average "put a kid on a horse" guest ranch. Here people learn to ride a horse and not "go for a ride on a horse."

So that means practice in the round pen first, learning the basic maneuvers. Then, after showing competency with those maneuvers our guests go to the arena to refine and further develop our control while introducing new dimensions to horsemanship.

So lets see how Katie and James progress through our program.

Now that Katie and James have had their safety orientation and are "off the leash" it is time to get started with horseback riding.

That begins "on the ground" learning about saddles, bits, and how to use one's seat and legs to position the horse.

Mankind has been riding, and living with, horses for more the 5,500 years. There is little that is "new," but much to learn.

All the way from our old home town of Atlanta, Ga., Katie and James came to stay with us.

James just graduated from High School and starts college next month, so Katie decided he deserved a visit to Concho Hills. We're sure glad they did.

All it takes is a little rain to see the desert flowers start to bloom. We only had 0.6 inches so that is "a little rain." Maybe more today. Anyway, we don't get a lot of color out on the high desert (7400 ft) so we are grateful and aware of what we get.

Well, Leanna knows how our horses have been trained and how to get them to where she wants to go. So it is time to put the horses to work. At the same time we get to enjoy the scenic country side and nature of the area. As the old cowboy saying states: "every time you ride a horse...you train a horse."

Leanna got to see a large herd of elk, jack rabbits, and a coyote.

As always, the time comes for our guest to leave our ranch and go back to their normal lives. Leanna, we had a great time getting to know you. May you continue to ride with your heels down, loose reins, and head to the heavens!

With the fundamental maneuvers learned in the round pen, we head over to the arena.

Being is a larger controlled area is easier for some but the arena has its own unique challenges.

Sometimes that wind just doesn't cooperate.

No worries, we were able to find plenty to do. We took a drive over to Point of Rocks canyon and took a look at the rock shelters and geology of the area. We even had time for some stories of the old ranchers who lived here.

All the way from California, Leanna came out to pay us a visit.

Leanna has recently bought a horse and thought she would come out and spend some time western riding.

We had the honor of being invited to our neighbor's branding.

It is a time when old friends, (some one may have not seen in a year or two) get together to help with the seasonal work of branding the calves.

It is our favorite "chore" and we feel very special when invited. It is a chance for us to get close to the meaning of ranching.

We branded three corrals this morning. Then Tammy fed us over at the ranch.

Come along and see what it is like.

I wish I could share the noise and the hustle. Everyone has a job and teamwork is essential. It is fast work. Each calf spends about 30 seconds or less on the ground.
