🏗️🌲🌊 An Important Milestone For the Klamath River – Removal of the Copco 2 Dam Complete! Crews spent October putting the final touches on the removal of the Copco No. 2 Dam on California’s Klamath River, removing the remaining diversion infrastructure, grading the river channel, and performing erosion control. Deconstruction of the dam structure was completed in September. This work prepares the river canyon for consistent river flows, something which the river canyon below the dam hasn’t seen in 98 years. Restored flows in this reach will provide new whitewater boating opportunities on a section of river that has been dewatered and inaccessible to the public. Only a handful of boaters have ever been able to experience this run. American Whitewater secured the removal of nearly 1,000 trees below Copco No. 2 as a part of the official dam removal project process. They were removed by helicopter in September in collaboration with area Tribes and without their removal would have created a significant hazard for river runners.

If you get out on a lake or river. Remember to wear or have a pfd (life jacket) if you are paddle boarding or boating. (Adults must have one accessible and kids must be wearing it, per BCSO). If you are tubing, you don't need one legally; however, life jackets are cool. If you wear a life jacket, YOU are now cool 😎 .

In the interest of creating something more user friendly from this page I've created a group. Feel free to join 'Paradise, Ca Paddlers'. If you would like to find people to paddle with. (flat water in the Butte County area)

If you've got a motor, you gotta register. Without a motor, you're all good in CA, for now!

Food for thought as we all keep paddling. Wear your PFD (personal flotation device aka life jacket).

Additionally, American Whitewater records deaths on moving waterways each year. The half time report this year had a comparable number of deaths to years past, however, the makeup of the 28+/- deaths was largely recreational boaters on moving water, whereas in the past a larger % were experienced whitewater paddlers.

A good hypothesis is that there are many more people out on the water this year who aren't typically on the water, likely, due to the pandemic. Remember, you are priority 1 and the person you are rescuing is priority 2.

I recommend always being priority 1 i.e. be the rescuer not the rescueeeeeeeeeeeie!

UPDATE: A 70 mile stretch of US Highway 95 remains closed this morning due to a mudslide that blocked multiple places between mileposts 197 to 205. The highway closure begins at milepost 161 (Nora Street New Meadows) to Lake Road (6 miles south of Grangeville). Idaho State Police report that cleanup has begun but progress is slow due to the extent of the slide and water over the roadway. The Idaho Department of Transportation is advising travelers to use alternative routes.

Hi all! I no longer live in Butte County but will return this summer to kayak Lake Oroville and perhaps the Feather River. My favorite spot, the Diversion Pool, has recently opened! The upper end remains closed, however most of the pool is open for kayaking. I may do this soon. Nelson Bar cartop launch is under water, as soon as the water level is below the parking lot I'll launch there and go upstream. If anyone would like to join me post a reply. Also if anyone would like to assume management of this page, I'd be happy to turn it over. Hope everyone is doing well. Hildy, administrator
