You shouldn't spend 2 days recovering from a 1-hour workout👇

Feeling exhausted after workouts might seem like an indicator of a “great session”, but often, chronic post gym fatigue may be a signal your workouts are doing more harm than good.

In addition to the signals mentioned in the video, when you push too hard, too often, your body pays a cost:
❌ You stop trusting yourself.

The more often you override your body's signals, the harder it becomes to tell the difference between: "I need to challenge myself" and "I need to back off today."

And eventually?
❌ Exercise stops feeling good.

It becomes another chore.
Another stressor.
Another place where you feel like you're failing.

The goal of moving your body isn't to push through every signal your body sends. The goal is learning which signals deserve your attention.

To notice when your breath gets shallow or disappears. To feel when tension creeps into your jaw and shoulders. To recognize when you're moving from a place of fear rather than strength.

And then we adjust.

And here's what's wild: when people stop forcing themselves through workouts and start listening, they actually get stronger *faster*.

Why does my trainer care if I slept last night?

Because sleep, stress, and nutrition all affect how your nervous system shows up to train.

You only slept four hours? Your body's already running on empty. Adding a hard workout on top of that isn't building strength, it's digging you a deeper hole.

You're stressed about work? Your nervous system is already in fight or flight. It can't access strength when it's busy trying to survive.

You haven't eaten much today? Your body doesn't have the fuel to perform.

Most gyms don't ask. They just hand you a program and expect you to execute.
We ask because your workout needs to match what your body can actually handle that day.

That's how we coach at Forest. Free intro sessions in Madison and Lake Mills.

One of my absolute favorite drills for building your glutes, improving hip stability, and fixing your running gait.

Grab three objects. Cones, solo cups, kids' toys, whatever you've got. Set them up in front of you.
Stand on one foot and reach down to touch any one of the objects with either hand. Stand back up. Keep going back and forth between the objects, using both hands, anywhere between 5 and 10 times.

Then switch to the other leg and do the same thing.
Simple drill. Big payoff for hip stability and glute strength.

Hi! I'm Annie, owner of Forest Coaching and Studios.

I've been in the movement industry for over 20 years and navigated healing spaces for myself for nearly 30. What I care about most is helping people feel ALIVE and safe in their bodies and daily lives. Not just stronger. Not just "pain-free". ALIVE and safe and present.

I also run an executive coaching practice at annieforest.com, where I work with leaders who want to show up as their whole selves, not just the parts that fit neatly into a job description.

At Forest, I lead a team of coaches who understand that movement isn't just about reps and sets. It's about nervous system safety, building capacity, and teaching people to trust their bodies and themselves.

I'd love to meet you or introduce you to one of my incredible colleagues, and you're invited to join us for a free intro sessions in Madison or Lake Mills.

Standing squats hurt your knees? Try this instead.

Horizontal squats are a fantastic way to strengthen your quads and work on the squat movement pattern when the standing version is too tough or causes pain.

Here's how it works:
Start in a quadruped position (hands and knees).
Rock your hips back towards your heels, then rock forward and straighten your knees.
Bring your knees back down and repeat.

To make it more challenging, hover your knees the whole time. For the hardest variation, start in a push-up plank position and rock back towards your heels, then straighten back to plank.
You'll feel this in your thighs, and it builds the squat pattern without the joint stress of standing.

Most gyms skip progressions like this. They assume if you can't squat standing, you just avoid squats altogether. We teach you how to build the movement safely so you can progress when your body is ready.

Physical therapy ends. Then what?

You hurt your shoulder. PT gets you out of pain. Great. But then you go back to the gym and re-injure it because nothing actually got stronger.

Here's what's missing: PT stops when pain stops. But pain-free doesn't mean strong. It doesn't mean your nervous system trusts load again. It doesn't mean you have stability in the ranges you couldn't access before.

At Forest, rehab transitions into strength. We start where PT left off. We build stability in those ranges, we teach your nervous system to trust load again, and by the time we're done you're not just pain-free, you're stronger than before the injury.

That's the difference between treating pain and building capacity.

Here's why we don't load you heavy on day one.

Most gyms start you with heavy squats and deadlifts on day one. You're sore for days. Something hurts by week two. You're modifying everything or wondering if your body is broken.

At Forest, first we teach the skill. Your hip hinge looks like this. We make sure your brain understands the pattern and your nervous system trusts it.

Then we add strength. Now we load it. Your joints are stable and mobile, so the weight feels manageable instead of scary.
Only after you're strong and skillful do we add speed. Now it's a swing or a more dynamic movement.

This isn't us being slow. This is respecting how your nervous system actually learns.

Skip the steps and your brain pulls the safety brake. Follow the progression and you build real, lasting capacity.

Have you been trying lunges for years and they still suck?

You're doing everything right. You practice them regularly. You've tried them with weight, without weight, but they still don't feel like they're making you stronger.

Try this: Stand with one foot in front of the other, heel to toe, and close your eyes. Then open your eyes and try the other side.

If you're wobbling all over the place and can't maintain stability on one foot, you're not going to get stronger when you load one foot. Your nervous system is saying "I don't feel safe enough to stay balanced on one leg."

That's what happens when we don't have stability before we try to build strength.

We teach how to stabilize before we add load at Forest Coaching.

If you've been building strength but it's just not sticking, we're offering free 30-minute sessions in Madison and Lake Mills.
