East Madison Martial Arts

East Madison Martial Arts East Madison Martial Arts offers quality instruction in both Bujin Ki Do Karate and Katori Shinto Ryu Katori classes are offered to ages 14 and up.

East Madison Martial Arts, LLC (EMMA) is committed to providing quality instruction in both Karate and Katori Shinto Ryu in a traditional style dojo (school), at an affordable price with absolutely no contracts. EMMA is home to one of only two Katori Shinto Ryu dojos in Wisconsin! Specifically, we teach Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-Ryu, which is a style of Japanese swordsmanship and weapons traini

ng founded in 1447 by Choisai Sensei and was the first martial art designated a "national living cultural treasure" by the government of Japan. It is the oldest continuously practiced martial tradition of Japan. EMMA is directly associated with Sugawara Martial Arts Institute (Sugawara Budo) in Tokyo Japan. Our youth and adult Karate program, Bujin Ki Do Karate (The Way of the Warrior Spirit), founded by Jeff Hempel Sensei and Maria Banchik Sensei, is a blend of traditional and modern karate coupled with realistic self-defense. Students of Bujin Ki Do are taught a breadth of techniques and concepts from numerous different martial arts including Aikido, Jeet Kune Do, Kali / Eskrima, Silat, Savate and Kenjutsu. While traditional karate is an empty hand art (Karate-do = "the way of the empty hand"), in Bujin Ki Do we utilize numerous weapons for distance training, timing and enhancing focus. Much like Aikido, Bujin Ki Do students are taught the fundamental art of Ukemi Nage — throwing and being thrown (taking falls) — rolling both forward and backward. We offer karate for children as young as 5 years old. For school age children, we offer classes based on grade level: K-2, 3rd-4th grade and grade 5 an up. Our adult karate program is a great way to stay fit and enjoy stress relief and self-improvement. Contact us today for more information about classes at East Madison Martial Arts.

We are currently accepting new-student applications. If you are interested in the study of Katori Shinto Ryu, please message us or email [email protected] to learn more.

As one of only 2 Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū (天真正伝香取神道流) dojos in Wisconsin, we are honored to carry on the traditions and teachings of one of the oldest Japanese martial arts.

The art has been continuously passed from teacher to student since its founding in 1447 by Iizasa Choisai Ienao (飯篠 長威斎 家直). Students of Katori Shinto Ryu study a comprehensive system of martial arts that includes Japanese swordsmanship (Kenjutsu, 剣術) and sword drawing techniques (Iaijutsu, 居合術), as well as the use of two swords (Ryotojutsu, 両刀術), the staff (Bojutsu, 棒術), the naginata (Naginatajutsu, 長刀術), and the spear (Sojutsu, 槍術). Students learn the principles and techniques of Katori through hours of kata training with teachers and other students.
