Congratulations to Peighton, Lilli, and Autumn! They have had 4 consecutive winning seasons and will graduate the winningest class in program history. They have a pair of sectional runner-up finishes their freshman and junior years and capped off last year’s 11 results on the scoreboard with 12 wins and counting this season. The offseason saw a move back to an easier sectional pathway that no longer features #3 Lawrenceburg (15-1) in the lineup and should have the Cubs winning their first sectional since 2002. A special thanks to Coach Hertz’s former players, Emma and Molly, for coaching on the Lady Cubs this season and ensuring these seniors could continue to play. We know the 2001 side featured the best roster in program history and those women and those before had a schedule much different than this season and recent years with the school’s departure from conference play and seeking play against sides that have never had teams. The level of HHC competition was one of the historically low this season with all the switches in coaches over the years and the focus on year round club. Thus, it’s inaccurate to say this side is the best simply because the times are not the same. The 2001 side ended its campaign 2-0 to Columbus North in sectional play after defeating Columbus East and with a move in sectional play in 2002 that saw a championship. North’s middle school team defeated HHC varsity sides this past summer. This era of soccer simply isn’t the same. Peighton, Lilli, and Autumn have set the record for wins as Lady Cubs, but we respect the accomplishments of those that made these opportunities possible. We are proud of all our Lady Cubs!

Congratulations Iyana Phelps for earning the MCHS female athlete of the year award! Iyana becomes our 4th player in 6 seasons to earn this distinction. Iyana joins former teammate Molly Armbrecht, Bailey Dyer, Kennedy Stidham to earn this award. Iyana this year was an All-State 1st team center back on the soccer field and we didn’t give up a goal in the post season in the run of play in 3 post seasons until an own goal in the sectional championship this past fall, we went 8-0 on the East Field in the 2023 campaign, earned an IHSAA team sportsmanship pin against #1 ranked Providence on the road for the second time at the Pioneers, our 6th national team Academic Award, and our third straight platinum national award for team ethics- no yellow or red cards. Soccer has no class distinction or delineation with All-State teams or All-district- it’s one team of 20 field players. Iyana was an All-District top team player, 2x All-District 2nd team selection in the most difficult district in the state, 3 time Academic All-State selection, Ironman recipient, 2 year captain, the 1st soccer player men’s or women’s to be 1st team All-State, 3x Golden Boot earner, graduates the program’s all-time leader in goals, points (assists and goals combined), most defensive shutouts in a career. Her graduating class had the most results on the scoreboard in women’s soccer history and Iyana graduates with the career high volunteer hours for women’s soccer during her 4 years.

Bailey Dyer also won the Mary Louise Eisenhardt Sportsmanship Award. Jessie Dyer and Taylor Lynch also won these awards their senior years. We are proud of the example our young women set on the field, in the classroom, and the community.

Resharing, due to an old friend. Thank you to our fans who joined us this morning for Senior Day, as we honored our 3 seniors before the match. We played with lots of heart again today and tallied the opening goal less than 5 minutes into the match to become just the 2nd team to score on the Panthers this season. We found a 2nd goal with 12:35 to go in the 1st half to make it 2-0 at the intermission and found the back of the net with 7:31 to go in the match for a 3-0 final. We improved to 7-0 on the East Field, had 3 different goal scorers on the day, and it was our 5th shutout of the season. Corydon came into today averaging 5 goals a game and nearly 27 shots a game and we held them to 0 goals and 0 shot attempts by keeping the ball in the front 60, generating 5 corners, 31 shots and forcing 13 saves from the Panther goalkeeper. We had a good challenge this week facing and defeating a pair of conference standing leaders. We are back in action Wednesday night for our last home match with a 6pm kickoff against HHC member Jennings County, and on the road at 8-1-1 Batesville and conclude the regular season at HHC member Seymour for their senior night.

Coaches organizations establish guidelines for eligibility and are voted on by the district, state level committees. Only the senior class is eligible for some awards and they were the last class able to earn All-Conference accolades with the school district opting to leave a highly competitive environment. The women’s side would have had 3/4 all-conference players this past season given the results that they had within HHC and the placement we would have finished. Only women’s soccer voted to stay in conference. As a result, students have not been given the chance to earn some of the distinctions afforded to having a conference. We have Attitudes of gratitude for the opportunity to be able to play some of the best sides in HHC, Providence, Lawrenceburg, South Dearborn, Batesville, among some other great sides because we know we learn from the challenge and who we are at the end as a part of the process is the most important part. People forget stats, but we can all recall our favorite teacher.

A special thanks to our parents, players for making this past season a memorable experience and sharing in the December banquet celebration.

Last night at the intermission of the boy’s JV basketball game the fall academic all-state and all-player honorees received their letterman jacket patches. In soccer our coaches associations have the highest gpa and act/sat standards of any sport to earn Academic All-State honors and we would not want it any other way. In Women’s soccer: Kailee Lock and Iyana Phelps are both 3x Academic All-State Honorees and are both presently under consideration for Academic All-American Honors. Lock and Phelps are 2x 1st Team Academic ISCA honorees, 1x ICGSA Honorable Mention All-State Academic selections, and 4x USC National Team Academic winners.

Phelps is a 3x All-State player selection (3rd team-sophomore year, 2nd team junior year). This year she became the 1st men’s or women’s soccer player to earn All-State player honors this fall season, after capping off a trio of winning seasons which saw 2 sectional runner ups to top 5 sides in our division. Phelps graduates as Madison’s all-time leading goal scorer. She will be playing soccer at Anderson University this fall.

We are very proud of you, Kailee,
Iyana, and all of our scholar-athletes in the classroom. Lock and Phelps became the 11th and 12th women’s soccer players to be 3x Academic All-State player honors, 18 players have earned All-Academic ISCA honors, 12 Players ICGSA Academic All-State, 1 player Academic All-American. In the previous 20 years of women’s soccer history before Coach Hertz, only one season were players awarded All-Academic honors by the ISCA and none by ICGSA. Thank you Coach Hertz for valuing academic recognition and ensuring our kids had a voice on the state and district levels.

Today marks the 38th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day — an annual celebration that honors the achievements and strength in women’s athletics. Thank you to our scholars-athletes past and present who have utilized the beautiful game to expand the opportunities of other young women. The character and confidence gained through soccer helps foster some of the very best leaders on and most importantly off the field.

Officially a Raven this fall, as Iyana signed with Anderson University where she is a direct admin to their honors college where she will be majoring in nursing. Thank you, Iyana, for trusting the process and being a leader by example, as one of our best scholar-athletes on and off the field and not just thinking talent substitutes work ethic and character. We appreciate your investment in making the last 4 years some of the very best in Madison women’s soccer history. You have left a lasting legacy on our program. We wish you the best at Anderson! 🐦‍⬛ ⚽️ ❤️

Congratulations to Iyana Phelps who has signed to play collegiate soccer at Anderson University! Iyana has had a phenomenal career as a Lady Cub and will undoubtedly make her mark at AU. It has been a joy to watch you compete, Iyana! We wish you the best of luck at the next level!

Homecoming over the years has featured some of our very best. Tonight was no different, as Bridget Jade was crowned Homecoming Queen. Bridget was a 4 year member of our women’s soccer team and is a very special part of our family. Congratulations, Bridget! We are proud of you, B. 👑 ⚽️ ❤️

We are excited to announce Iyana Phelps has committed to play soccer at Anderson University where she is a direct admit to their nursing program to follow her pursuits as a nurse anesthetist. Phelps rewrote the record books during her time as a Lady Cub, as she placed the team first. She graduates as a 4 year member of the Madison Women’s Soccer program. She was a 2 time captain, 3x golden boot winner, is Madison’s all-time leading scorer, was a 3x Academic All-State selection, a 2x All-District 2nd team selection (only one in men’s or women’s soccer history at Madison), a 3x All-State player (1st team-senior year, 2nd team- junior year, and 3rd team as a sophomore). Iyana led her team to a pair of sectional runner-up finishes against top 5 sides in the state and 2 IHSAA team sportsmanship pins. She continued to improve each season and placed the collective team before individual accolades with a We > Me mindset. Phelps slotted in as defender her last three seasons and has the versatility to play midfield or forward as well. She has the uncanny ability to make adjustments to shutout opponents (24 career shutouts, only 1 opponent scored in us in the last 3 postseasons from live play) while connecting the midfield into the final third. Phelps has left a lasting legacy on the Lady Cub soccer program. Thank you for the incredible investment to development and loyalty over the years, Iyana. Iyana is the last HHC All-Conference soccer player and would have been all four years if Madison was still in the Hoosier Hills Conference. Nonetheless, she is the lone All-State 1st Team player in men’s or women’s Madison soccer history. We wish you the best as an Anderson Raven, Iyana. A special thanks to Iyana’s teammates over the years and Coach Hertz for helping build moments like these for our kids. It’s a collective family effort to be a part of the 7% of high school athletes to play soccer at the college level. United Soccer Coaches recently released the 2023 National Team Ethics and Merit award winners. We were 1/11 women’s sides in the nation to earn this platinum award this season and for the 3rd consecutive season.
