In the late 1700s in St Andrews, the round was 22 holes. Five of the holes were considered too short and were merged with others in 1764. The 18-hole round was born by accident. Every golf course in the world copies the format because St Andrews changed its mind in 1764. We have no idea what golf would look like if those 5 holes had survived.

1913 US Open. The Country Club, Brookline. The two best golfers in the world — Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, both British, both legends — had come to America to win the championship. A 20-year-old American amateur named Francis Ouimet, who lived across the street from the course and had worked as a caddie there as a teenager, qualified last-minute. With his 10-year-old caddie Eddie Lowery on the bag, Ouimet tied Vardon and Ray after 72 holes. In the 18-hole playoff the next day, the kid beat them both.
