Before 1949 golfers marked their balls with twigs, leaves, scorecards, or whatever they had on hand. Then a PGA Tour player was caught moving his marker closer to the hole between marking and replacing. The Tour mandated coins or tees the following year, specifically because coins don't reshape easily. One cheater gave us the rule we all use 76 years later.
