Our favorite part of winter hiking? The views!!!

It’s important to plan ahead and prepare for winter hikes to make sure you have the proper clothing, gear, and footwear to handle the cold and winter trail hazards. Here’s a few of our tips for winter hiking:

1) LAYER UP!🧣You will likely find yourself shedding clothing layers as you move and your body warms up, and putting them back on when you stop to rest. Wear a base layer made of moisture wicking materials such as polyester or nylon and avoid wearing cotton which traps moisture. Don’t forget your hat, gloves, and hiking socks!

2) WEAR PROPER FOOTWEAR! 🥾Wearing supportive shoes with adequate insulation and tread made for the trail helps you tackle long miles with ease, keep your feet warm and dry, and avoid slipping on hazards like fallen leaves, ice, or snow.

3) BRING A BACKPACK! 🎒Make sure your pack has room for all of your essentials like snacks, water, and first aid supplies, as well as any extra layers that you bring or take off during your hike. Don’t forget to pack any fun extras you want on your hike like a camera, an eno hammock, a packable quilt or blanket, a lightweight camp chair, or a camp stove for a mid-hike hot cocoa break!

It was the perfect weekend for a hike at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park! Thank you to everyone who joined us on our group hike!

Last week, Macon Bibb county donated 250 acres to Ocmulgee Mounds NHP, which expands the park’s total acreage to 1857 acres! Ocmulgee Mounds NHP protects and preserves important ecosystems and a history of continuous human habitation going back to at least 12,000 years ago. They have 7 mounds, 8 miles of hiking trails, a museum with over 2,000 artifacts, and it’s all completely free!
