As the premier martial arts school in southeast Michigan, we are proud to be a member of the Zen Bei Butoku Kai, one of the largest and oldest martial arts organizations in the country. While this is our primary focus, we also blend in curriculum from other styles of martial arts, such as aikido, jujitsu and arnis. Our instructors hold black belts in multiple martial arts. Sensei John Wasilina has

been a practitioner of the martial arts for 25 years, and as a 6th degree black belt, is the highest ranking member of our organization in the state.

Word of the week: karate! 📚

The word karate is a Japanese or originated word which translates to “empty hand” in English. Kara meaning empty and Te meaning hand. Before it meant empty hand, it used to mean Chinese hand.

Karate consists a variety of strikes, kicks, blocks, punches, and stances, no weapons. We put those five components together to make up Kihon (basics), kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring).

The ultimate goal of karate isn’t fighting, it’s to avoid conflict whenever possible.

There are many styles of karate, here at Butoku Karate Dojo, we practice in the style Shorinji Ryu which means Shaulin Temple Style.
