Hi all! Happy Friday! Here are a few additional tidbits, just so people know what to expect next week.

In order to create the proper distancing, equipment is now in three different locations.

- Fitness Center - contains all weights, treadmills, and
stairmasters
- Basketball court - contains ellipticals, bikes, and rower
- Studio (former FFD room right outside the fitness center) -
contains sled, hand weights, and steps

We have strict capacities for each space. They are as follows:

- Fitness Center - 10 people
- Basketball court - 9 people on the equipment, additional 6
people (3 per hoop) can use the side hoops)
- Studio - 4 people

We are asking everyone to enter the facility through the front entrance and exit through the doors outside the fitness center. The exception is if you need to use the ADA accessible door.

Please arrive ready to workout. The locker rooms will not be open. Bags will not be allowed in.

We appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to learn how to operate a fitness center during a pandemic.

Have a great weekend all!

Hi all! We are gearing up to reopen for our community members on Monday! Here is the schedule:

Monday & Wednesday - 10:00am - 6:00pm
Tuesday & Thursday - 10:00am - 4:00pm
Friday & Saturday - 9:00am - 2:00pm

You must wear a face covering in order to enter the facility and must keep it on during the time you are here.

Upon entry, you will be asked a series of questions as part of our symptom questionnaire. Those questions are pictured here.

Only those who had a membership as of March 13 will be allowed entry. We will not be selling new memberships or allowing day passes at this time.

As for the pool, we have hit a couple unexpected hurdles and will not be able to open the pool nor the locker rooms on Oct 5. Our target to open the pool and locker rooms is now Oct 12. We are working diligently to make that happen.

Thank you all for your patience and we look forward to seeing everyone next week. Keep an eye out here tomorrow for more information about our new equipment layout and capacity limits.

Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center

Reopening update – Sept. 3

Hi all! As we come to the end of the first full week of our phase one reopening, we want to give an update and announce a tentative reopening date for our community members.

The fitness center opened to UMM students and employees on Aug. 26. The past eight days have given us a great opportunity to train our student staff and implement our new protocols. I am excited to say that everyone is adjusting to the new policies extremely well and we have had close to 100% compliance.

We are now tentatively planning to reopen to community members on Monday, Oct. 5. While this date is subject to change, we will be working diligently to meet this target date.

In this phase of reopening, the Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center will be open to anyone whose membership was current as of March 13. We will not be accepting new members and will not be offering day passes at this time.

We are planning for the Oct. 5 reopening to include the fitness center, as well as the locker rooms and pool. Again, this is tentative, as the locker rooms and pool are currently closed.

Some of the new policies that are in place include:

• Face coverings will be required at all times.
• Open hours will be limited.
• We will have strict capacity limits for the building and each open area.
o As a result, we are implementing a recommended registration process.
• Everyone who enters the facility will be subject to a COVID screening process, which will include a questionnaire.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to learn how to operate a fitness facility during a pandemic. Please be on the lookout for further updates.

As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to Mike Belanger at [email protected].

Hi all! I notice we have received a bunch of questions through facebook messenger.

Please forward your questions to me via email...[email protected].

I want to answer all questions and I will lose track of them on messenger.

My apologies, I should have included that in yesterday's announcement.

Thank you all!

Update

08/03/2020

The Murdock Fitness & Aquatics Center plan for a safe reopening has been approved. We are working to enact the plan and prepare the facility and equipment for opening and will publish a date of opening as soon as possible. Please be aware that we will reopen the facility in phases and with new user guidelines.

Some of the new policies will include:

Face coverings will be required at all times.

Open hours will be limited.

We will have strict capacity limits for the building and each open area. As a result, we are implementing a recommended registration process.

Users will be limited to students, employees, and those who had a membership as of March 15. We will not be accepting new memberships at this time, and we will not be able to process day passes.

Everyone who enters the facility will be subject to a COVID screening process, which will include a questionnaire and a temperature check.

Please note, the locker rooms, showers, and pool will not reopen during phase 1.

We have never run a fitness facility during a pandemic so please bear with us as we work to safely bring the facility back online. Please be on the lookout for further operating details and a reopening date.

Hi all. Today I talk about how to incorporate the kettlebell swing into your workout routine in terms of sets and reps. If you are a beginner just starting to practice the swing I think a great strategy is performing 10 reps at the top of each minute. As you get better you can get more creative with the reps, potentially progressing to 25 at the top of the first minute, 15 at the top of the second, 10 at the top of the third, and repeat until your grip gives out. That is a great way to focus on your recovery between bouts of swings.

I elaborate more in the video. Have a great day, and check back here for more videos!

07/06/2020

Hi all. Today I got a great question about what weight to use for your swings. I provide the answer in the video!

07/02/2020

Hi all! Today I show how to perform continuous swings, focusing two specific details:

1) How to transition from the up swing into the hike
2) Where to keep your gaze

I recommend starting with sets of five reps to help keep the focus on the details of the swing.

I hope these tips are helpful. Everyone have a great 4th of July, and check back here next week for more videos!

07/01/2020

Hi all! Welcome to July! Today I show how to get started performing kettlebell swings. The aspects of the swing covered are:

1) Set Up
2) Hike
3) Swing
4) Breath
5) Maximum Tension
6) Park

Give this a shot and hopefully it helps. Check back here tomorrow for another video!
