Southport Saltpetre Cave

Southport Saltpetre Cave Southport Saltpetre Cave was mined for nitre during the Civil War. We give tours that show dates and evidence of this era. Many beautiful formations.

David Crockett also got his saltpeter from this cave for his powder mill in Lawrence County.

Southport Chronic Cavers Grotto will be having it's 25 year anniversary on Halloween night, October 31. Anyone interested in joining or learning more about caving are more than welcome to attend. It will be located at Southport Cave and trips to nearby caves are planned. There is no charge and plenty of food will be provided. You can also camp if you wish to.

We are having a Halloween party on October 26th. Kid friendly from 4-6 pm. We will have chilli, hotdogs, ect. Cave will be open for anyone who wants to go. No charge, and you are more than welcome to camp.
