The Bujinkan Savage Dojo

The Bujinkan Savage Dojo The Bujinkan Savage Dojo was founded in February of 2003. The Dojo began in the fall of 2007 with the establishment of a commercial dojo in Winchendon MA.

While in Japan and under the guidance of and with the encouragement of my teacher Mark Davis, we met with 34th Bujinkan Soke Masaaki Hatsumi after class at Hombu Dojo and I asked permission to establish The Bujinkan Savage Dojo and permission was granted. We currently train in the North Central part Massachusetts at Camp Caravan in The Small Movements Hall in Royalston, MA. The Winchendon Martial

Arts Center, the center closed in the fall of 2012 and training resumed in its current location in January 2013. The Bujinkan Savage Dojo is also a part of New England Warrior Camp group with more info at www.explorechallengedevelop.com

Had a rare Monday off. Went into the Lynn woods for a little Shinrin-yoku (森林浴) or Forest Bathing… At various points along the way I stopped to practice my martial art. I was reminded of an old Japanese saying…
Saru mo ki kara ochiru (猿も木から落ちる) "Even monkeys fall from trees." This is a reminder that even experts or masters in their field make mistakes. Always explore, challenge, and develop your Warrior spirit!

My Bujinkan Savage dojo group have be discussing movement and spatial awareness…

Spatial awareness is not a single skill but a collection of sensory and cognitive processes:

Proprioception: The internal sense that tells you where your limbs are without you having to look at them. Different types of proprioceptors are in the muscles and joints to held build proprioception.

Vestibular System: the inner ear, it acts like a biological gyroscope, helping you to maintain balance and maintain your orientation relative to gravity and its effects.

Visual-Spatial Processing: your ability to interpret visual information to judge depth, distance, and motion. The eyes….

Sunday April 26th, 2026 will be the first Path Notes/ Sunday Lynn Woods Training… From 10:00~11:30am…

Last year we introduced 12 principles of the Ninpo/ Budo Taijutsu methodology that I feel are integral for one’s personal growth and development in our system (I understand there are more than twelve). This is what I refer to as theory…

Throughout the coming year, I will introduce 3 training drills for each of the 12 principles giving us a way to illustrate and practice them. This is what I refer to as “application of theory”. We searched for the principles in the context of formal kata but drills, these produce more immediate ah ha! moments. I also understand that some drills are working across multiple principles, we will work to make this clear. So it won’t be as simple as 12 principles x 3 drills = 36…. These drills, like the principles, I’ve internalized over my 50+ years of martial arts training. More information to come…

*You may participate in these trainings even if you didn’t last year. We will review the principles being illustrated by the drills at each session.*

Many of my friends and buyū (武友/ martial friend or bother) ask why I finish communiques and post with the phrase, “Be Well and Gassho…!”I believe in the power of words. Words have meaning… Like prayer or Mantra (a word, sound, or phrase repeated to aid concentration in prayer, meditation, and spiritual practices)… Lets break it apart:,
~Be: To exist, occur, or take place
~Well: In a good or satisfactory way. In a thorough manner. In good mental and physical health; free or recovered from illness.
~ Gassho (合掌): A Japanese term that translates to "palms of the hands placed together". It is a ritual hand gesture used in daily life to express reverence, gratitude, and unity…

So I say to one and all: Be Well and Gassho!

We all had a nice morning of training in the Lynn Woods during the Path Notes Sunday morning series… We continued to look at the core principles that influence our methodologies…. On this cold and cloudy day we learned from the clouds, using techniques from the Kumogakure Ryū (雲隠れ流) "School of Hiding in the Clouds" as the basis of our training… Thanks everyone for coming and putting forth great effort and energy. Stay tuned for further training opportunities. Come explore, challenge, and develop your Warrior spirit…!
