Possibly the biggest challenges in coaching are these:
-everything exists
-everything can work
-not everything works all of the time
-some things will likely work better than other things some times, while other things will work better at other times
Confusing?
Well, who said coaching was easy!
I’m a big fan of ‘autonomy-supportive’ coaching...but sometimes ‘controlled’ coaching may be a better approach to take.
Sometimes we need to drill, sometimes we are better served creating tasks with conditions to change behaviour, while at other times we may need to be explicit with instruction.
One coaching process seems to work well in one given context but not in another context.
Some players have a ‘need to achieve’, other players are motivated by more intrinsic markers like experience, cooperating and personal values. Sometimes we may feel it necessary to help those players who are more extrinsically-oriented to explore a greater sense of inner meaning. And sometimes, those players who are primed intrinsically may find it useful to discuss some outcome targets and some ego-oriented chat.
Coaching is difficult! And certainly never obvious…but when treated as such, pretty much always fun!
Engaging players…helping them learn…teaching them how to compete - these are broad ranging and to a large degree uniquely personal to each individual. And so when you’re a coach of a team of 15, 20, 25 players...then the processes in your practice probably need to be quite robust. You, yourself, probably need to be quite flexible to accommodate every individual.
This is both your burden as a coach and your privilege. And if you’re passionate about coaching it will deepen the bags under your eyes and increase facial creases of confusion beside your eyes.
But in spite of this unwanted non-surgical change to your face…you’ll still be gripped by it. And you’ll still continue to do it.
So aim to enjoy the uncertainty of coaching. Accept that coaching lies in the grey and is never black and white. And remind yourself daily that…
-everything exists
-everything can work
-not everything works all of the time
-some things will likely work better than other things some times, while other things will work better at other times
