We had our own Lionfish Derby this morning. We caught 30 fat ones on 2 dives! We will be eating good for the next few days! If you have never had Lionfish it is a flakey, buttery white fish that is great lightly fried and in ceviche.

Remember that buoyancy control begins with proper weighting! Here are 3 things to keep in mind before your next dive:

1. Make sure to calculate weight requirements of different exposure suits, dive environments (saltwater vs. freshwater), and tank composition (steel vs. aluminum). The amount of weight you select should allow you to descend, not make you sink.

2. Your BCD is not an elevator. Be aware of how your BCD responds to adding or venting small amounts of air.

3. And remember buoyancy changes during the dive. On the descent, your wetsuit compresses, decreasing buoyancy. During the dive, the tank may become more buoyant as the gas in your tank is depleted. On ascent, the air in your wetsuit and BCD expands, increasing your buoyancy.

By mastering this skill, you are enhancing your diving and reducing the risk of injuries such as barotrauma, uncontrolled ascents, marine life injuries, and so much more.
