Lower Chattooga River Canoe/Kayak Trail

Lower Chattooga River Canoe/Kayak Trail The Lower Chattooga River Canoe/Kayak Trail begins at the launch site located on Lyerly Dam Road in Lyerly, Georgia.

The Lower Chattooga River Canoe/Kayak Trail is a water trail that begins at the launch on Lyerly Dam Road, in the Town of Lyerly, Georgia The trail is 7.5 miles and is usually a 6 hour trip to the take out point on Holland-Chattoogaville Road below Lyerly The launch is located next to the old Lyerly Dam Bridge just below the ruins of the historic Lyerly Dam. The Chattooga River sometimes referred

to as "The Other Chattooga River" is a much more calm and peaceful river than the one in Northeast Georgia that also bears the same name. From the launch site in Lyerly the trail extends 7.5 miles south of Lyerly to the Chattoogaville site next to the bridge on Holland-Chattoogaville Road. The Town of Lyerly and Chattooga County partnered on the project to develop the sites in 2012. Later that year the Town of Lyerly, Chattooga County, and the Coosa River Basin Initiative partnered and applied for a Recreational Trails Grant through Georgia DNR for $99,700.00. The town was awarded the grant and it will be used for facilities and upgrades to the trail and an additional launch site. The improvements are expected to begin in the fall of 2013.

We have had several people ask about a business to provide transportation for kayakers. People want to leave their car at the take out and have someone take them back to the dam to put in. May be a good business for a local to start up.

Two kayaks were found in Lyerly this morning that appear to have been lost from a vehicle. If you are the owner message us through this page and provide a description of the kayaks.

We had a group of kayakers who lost an orange dry bag w/ their car keys and personal items inside yesterday. If anyone finds the bag please return it to Lyerly Town Hall or drop it by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office.

Water levels are at the lowest they've been on the trail in several years, but it is still float-able from Lyerly Dam to Chattoogaville. There are a few places on shoals that are getting down to less than 8" in depth and boats may drag, and the usual tight spots are even tighter but most trail-goers and especially the ones who know the trail already will make it just fine.

We've finally finished all the work at the launches and use of the trail has grown by leaps and bounds in the last two years and will definitely continue to grow. In the very near future we would like to establish a volunteer group of Trail Keepers for the Lower Chattooga River Canoe/Kayak Trail to assist with monthly clean up at the launches, keeping an eye out for any issues at the launches, and monitoring and reporting trail conditions. We would also like to do a litter clean up on the trail a couple of times a year. If you would like to volunteer please message us through this page!
