Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open

News Release by C. Harrigan

East Meadow, NY: The historic Eisenhower Red course played host to the US AmTour on a sunny and pleasant day which gave way to some cool spring air once the sun went down. Eisenhower Red is a classic parkland course. The course plays long and the fairways are of medium width. The greens ran true and the course provided a tough but fair test of golf. We had great pools for Skins and Giant Skins, in addition to four par 3 chances for CTP. In summary, it was a great day. Here are your top flight champions and others who vied for the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open trophies

Champ Flight:
Carel Garbers (81) distanced himself from the pack on the back 9 where he bounced back from an opening 9 42 to card a 39 on the back 9. The key to Carel’s round was his consistency as his worst score on any hole was a bogey. In addition to the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open Championship Flight trophy Carel earned a $100 American Express Gift Card.

Player Flight:
Ken Ambrosio (81) parred the first five holes and strung four consecutive pars on holes 11 through 15. Pars in bunches are always a good thing and they enabled him to secure a one stroke win in the competitive Player flight. In addition to the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open Player Flight trophy Ken was awarded a $150 American Express Gift Card.

Jason Ha (82) carded seven pars and birdied the long and challenging par 3 13th. For second place in the Player Jason was awarded a $75 American Express Gift Card.

Kyle Joe (83) heated up on the back 9 by parring 6 of the 7 holes between the 10th and 16th. He prevailed in a match of cards with a back 9 (40) to earn the third place prize, a $45 American Express Gift Card.

Alex Cesaria (83) started and finished the round on heaters, going one under through the first four and parring the 16th, 17th and 18th. Alex earned a $30 American Express Gift Card.

Hogan Flight (8.0 – 11.9):

Dylan Stilin (81) earned his second US Am Tour title, validating his first win and then some with a sizeable 4 stroke separating him from the next best. Two back 9 birdies cemented the win for Dylan. In addition to the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open Hogan Flight trophy Dylan was awarded a $170 American Express Gift Card.

Chad Horner (85) made perhaps his final NY start a very good one with a more than solid runner-up performance prevailing in a match of cards with a back 9 (41).. Chad moved to Atlanta shortly after the Eisenhower Red event so I will be sure to check-up and see how he is doing against the Hotlanta competition. As the runner-up Chad earned an $85 American Express Gift Card.

Frank Mirabile (85/41) is always in contention in the Hogan flight. Frank parred 7 holes including the first 3 par 3s. Frank earned a $50 American Express Gift Card.

Dima Kutznetsov (86) had a terrific stretch around the turn where he birdied the 8th and parred the 9th, 10th and 11th. For 4th place Dima earned a $35 American Express Gift Card. In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Hogan Flight trophy, Dylan was awarded a $160 American Express Gift Card.

Palmer Flight (12.0 – 15.9):

Jorge Chavez (83) parred 7 holes and birdied another. Jorge secured the victory with a clutch par on the very difficult par 4 18th. In addition to the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open Palmer Flight trophy Jorge was awarded a $140 American Express Gift Card.

Robbie Aguilar (86) had four consecutive pars on the front 9 and a birdie on the back 9 to sure up a runner-up finish. I really appreciate Robbie and Andrea competing in several NY events this spring and wish them great golf back home in Florida and at majors throughout the country. For 2nd place Robbie earned a $70 American Express Gift Card.

Bilal Jordan (88/44) prevailed in a match of cards to earn the 3rd place prize, a $40 American Express Gift Card. Bilal, the 2023 Jones Flight National Champion makes his way to NY a few times each season and he typically does not go home empty handed.

Glenn Mezzapesa (88/49) is a gift card earning machine and in true Glenn form earned a $30 American Express Gift Card for his T-3 performance.

Jones Flight (16.0 – 19.9):

Paul Catalano (81) had an epic round that included 9 pars and a birdie, a performance like that is 1 in 100 in the Jones flight so unsurprisingly Paul cruised to a commanding 5 stroke victory. In addition to the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open Jones Flight trophy Paul was awarded a $200 American Express Gift Card.

Chris Aldrich (86) carded 5 pars on the front 9, including consecutive pars from the 7th to the 9th. He then showed great tenacity by bogeying every hole on the back 9. Chris’s grit earned him runner-up and a $100 American Express gift card.

Andrea Aguilar (88) had consecutive pars on the 8th through the 11th and added a birdie on the 14th for good measure. For third place Andrea earned a $50 American Express Gift Card.

Gabriel Caesar (90/42/28) earned the 4th place gift card, valued at $35 in a match of cards. The highlight of Gabe’s round was back to back birdie on the 11th and 12th.

John Balingit (90/42/29) earned a $30 American Express Gift Card. John played well in streaks, going birdie-par on the 2nd and 3rd, pars on the 10th-12th, and par-par on the 16th and 17th.

Leo Rosario (92/42) prevailed in a match of cards to earn the 5th place prize, a $25 American Express Gift Card. Leo parred the 2nd and 3rd and birdied the 5th.

Tiger Flight (20.0 – Above):

Brian Thomas (94) enjoyed some home cooking as being a resident of Uniondale he has surely played Eisenhower Red numerous times. In addition to the Eisenhower Red 5 Star Open Tiger Flight trophy Brian was awarded a $120 American Express Gift Card.

Dave Smith (96) parred 5 holes, with four of them coming on the back 9. As the runner-up Dave was awarded a $60 American Express Gift Card.

John Ortiz (97/45) prevailed in a match of cards to earn the 3rd place prize, a $40 American Express Gift Card.

Sands Point Season Opener

News Release by C. Harrigan

Sands Point, NY (April 22, 2024): The US AM Tour started off the 2024 calendar year with sunny skies, seasonably cool temperatures that topped out at 60 degrees and intermittent wind that could make approach shots tricky. The competition was tight throughout with wily veterans and one new member emerging as flight champions. We also kicked off the calendar year with a playoff in the Player flight. Those who could take advantage of some of the scorable par 4s and shorter par 5s found themselves in the mix for the Flight prizes. We had great pools for Skins and Giant Skins, in addition to five par 3 chances for CTP. In summary, it was a great day to kick off another year. Here are your top scores and prize winners from our first event of 2024:

Champ Flight:

Carel Garbers (78) started on the first hole and got off to an uncharacteristic slow start, shooting a 43 on the front 9. He kept it together and on the strength of consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th returned to form with a near par 35 on the back 9. In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Championship Flight trophy Carel was awarded a $100 American Express Gift Card.

Player Flight:

Jesse Rosenstock (80) prevailed in a playoff over Jason Ha to earn his all important third win of the 2024 season. The third victory serves as an automatic qualifier for the 2024 National Championship at famed Innisbrook Resort. In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Player Flight trophy Jesse was awarded a $170 American Express Gift Card.

Jason Ha (80) was surprised to learn that his round put him in the running. Jason countered two double bogeys with 2 birdies and 7 pars. For 2nd place honors Jason was awarded an $85 American Express Gift Card.

Alex Lundqvist (81/39) prevailed in a match of cards to earn the third place prize, a $50 American Express Gift Card. Alex carded 8 pars and a birdie.

Walter Utzman (81/40) earned the fourth place prize, a $35 American Express Gift Card. Scott Kata(81/41) earned a share of third place points with Alex and Walter. Walter also had a birdie and 8 pars and Scott managed two birdies in the round.

Hogan Flight (8.0 – 11.9):

Dylan Stilin (82) earned his first US Am Tour title, always a momentous feat that gives our members confidence and a sense of validation. Dylan just played real solid all day with lots of pars and bogeys and no blow-up holes. He also finished the round in style with consecutive pars on his finishing holes, the 5th and 6th. In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Hogan Flight trophy, Dylan was awarded a $160 American Express Gift Card.

Chuck Fetta (83) earned a runner-up, a feat that was made possible by being the only one of two golfers in the entire field not to suffer at least one double bogey or worse. For second place Chuck earned an $80 American Express Gift Card. Practice at GOLFZON by Leadbetter and you may find similar consistency as Chuck.

Andrew Boughton (84) visited from the New Jersey tour and made the trip a fruitful one with a 3rd place finish that netted a $50 American Express Gift Card. Andrew parred seven holes.

John Daly (87) has a knack for ‘finishing in the money’ and earned a $30 American Express Gift Card for 4th place.

Palmer Flight (12.0 – 15.9):

John Bray (86) got off to a scintillating 1 over par start in his first 8 holes. When a US AM Tour debutante in the Palmer flight does that, competitors take notice as they check in on the live scoring. While he sputtered some after that fast start, John still managed to prevail in his first tournament, an incredible achievement. Chants during the awards of ‘move him up’ were good hearted and Palmers know they have someone new to contend with for the trophy at future events. In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Palmer Flight trophy, John was awarded a $180 American Express Gift Card.

Eric Smith (88) parred 5 holes en route to a solid runner-up finish. A runaway in the Palmer became tightly contested with Eric’s consistent play. For second place Eric earned a big share of points and a $90 American Express Gift Card.

Dylan Kolarcik (89) did his damage on the par 5s and 3s, parring three of the four par 5s and two par 3s. For third place Dylan was awarded a $50 American Express Gift Card.

Ozzie Ross (90) parred three par 3s and birdied another in an effort that earned Ozzie 4th place and a $40 American Express Gift Card.

Brian Jackson (91/43) prevailed in a match of cards to earn the 5th place prize, a $35 American Express Gift Card.

Jones Flight (16.0 – 19.9):

Lorenzo Chambers (90) played outstanding on the front 9 holes carding a 40 with four pars and a birdie and that was more than enough to secure a dominant four stroke win in the Jones flight. In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Jones Flight trophy, Lorenzo was awarded a $140 American Express Gift Card.

Michael Mardkha (94) finished runner-up in the Jones and earned a $70 American Express Gift Card. Mike parred 5 holes at VCSP including his final hole of the day, the 14th.

Mike Milinic (95/43) earned the third place prize in the Jones, a $40 American Express Gift Card with a match of cards over Leo Rosario. The highlight of Mike’s round was consecutive pars on the 12th-14th.

Leo Rosario(95/44) earned the fourth place prize, a $30 American Express Gift Card. Leo parred four holes and birdied another.

Tiger Flight (20.0 – Above):

John Ortiz (94) ended his round in style, parring his final two holes of the day to secure the Tiger Flight win. That’s clutch! In addition to the Village Club of Sands Point Tiger Flight trophy, John was awarded a$120 American Express Gift Card.

Dave Smith (97) parred the 6th and the 12th to secure 2nd place in the Tiger. Dave was awarded a $60 American Express Gift Card as the runner-up.

Anthony Stevens (101) secured third place in the Tiger on the strength of consecutive pars mid-round. For third place Anthony was awarded a $40 American Express Gift Card.
