I have owned, leased, worked to ride, took lessons, and went to camp. I have shown both english and western, in addition to gymkhana and in-hand. I say this all the time! Don't babysit your horse. Let them make the mistake, correct the mistake, and they will learn from it and develop accountability. If you constantly kick or squeeze through every trot step, they become dependent on you kicking or squeezing to hold the trot and they become desensitized to your leg. If you ask for the trot, leave them alone, and allow them to break, you can correct the mistake. They learn to hold the trot on their own without needing the kicking or squeezing for every stride.
Yes, sometimes it's easier to be the helicopter mom because breaking stride is frustrating. I'm going to squeeze/kick/cluck every stride because it's easier than fixing the problem and I'm used to it. However, future you will be so happy when you can ask your horse to trot or lope and they keep going until you tell them to stop!

I've said it once and I'll say it again. Even for 4-H and Open shows... You should be braiding (and banding for western when appropriate for your division)!
Don't try it for the first time the night before the show. Practice it! Practice your show grooming. Have a monthly spa day for your horse to practice your show grooming. If you aren't sure how you should groom for a show, ask! Even if your braids don't come out perfect, it shows you put the effort in.
There are so many variables when showing. You can't control the other riders, other horses, the weather, your horses attitude, the bugs, the spectators, what the judge catches or misses in a class... but you have absolute control over your own and your horses 'turnout'. That means even if s**t hits the fan, you still look good doing it. Show up with a clean, well groomed horse with clean, well fitting tack. Make sure your show clothes fit, and are clean, and pressed. Make sure your hair is tucked away and tidy. You might be showing in 10 year old hand me down boots and that's fine! But they better be clean! Your 'turnout' is often the judges first impression. Make it a good one! 😎
