Started in Texas: The sport began in Samford, Tx. in 1928 as a way for woman to compete in rodeos.
Figure-Eight Beginnings: Early versions used just two barrels arranged in a figure-eight pattern before the three-barrel cloverleaf became the standard.
Founded in 1948: The girls Rodeo Association was formed to make barrel racing an official sport.
Rules and Scoring
Timed to the thousandth: Times are recorded down to thousandths of a second.
Five-second penalty: Knocking over a barrel adds a 5-second penalty to the total time.
Disqualifications: Breaking the pattern or falling off results in immediate disqualification.
The 4D system: Competitions often use a 4D rating system to split riders into divisions by time, allowing more participants to win prizes.
