We had a couple of great questions regarding how the paired forms for HILT will be conducted, and our expectations, so here are some general notes:

First note - if there are multiple solutions to a play, you may be asked for either of them (or both) at the judges' discretion - some of that might be for time considerations, but in general, if there is an option in the play, be prepared to demonstrate it.

Second note - You are being graded on smoothness, proficiency, and fidelity to the text, not interpretation. There are many instances where someone can have a valid interpretation of a mechanic that differs from another (just as valid) interpretation - cf "cut short" as an example. So where there are movements without explicit instructions, as long as you have an actionable interpretation of the movement, you won't be penalized. If a movement is not specifically detailed, ie "step" rather than "step with the left," you won't be penalized for choosing a particular hand/foot/side/whatever in doing it. That said, your interpretation does need to follow any and all directions, sides, steps, and end in the prescribed result for that play.

Third note - any movement that is given explicitly in the text and then referred to later (such as the failer) will be assumed to be performed exactly as described, unless Paurenfeyndt discusses how to change it or describes a variant.

Fourth note - re: throws and other "illegal" movements. Paurenfeyndt describes in several instances things like striking with the cross, throws, and hitting the back of the head. Any described tournament illegal movement is to be demonstrated NOT completed. For throws, this means a cooperative bend with the "throwee" lifting one leg, demonstrating how they would have been thrown without actually doing it. The same with back of head strikes and strikes with anything other than the weak of the blade - 60 degrees of rotation on a cut that stops before hitting the back of the head, while demonstrating that you WOULD have, presenting the cross to the face where you WOULD have hit them, etc. ANY completed illegal movement by tournament rules will carry the normal penalty - yellow card, failed exchange, etc. We want accuracy, but safety first.
