Dear drivers, if you see a horse trailer on the road, please don’t pull in front of it—even if it looks like there’s a big gap ahead. That space isn’t for you. It’s for the safety of the horses riding behind me.
You see, I’m not following the car in front slowly because I’m lazy or distracted—I’m doing it so I have time to stop gently. Inside this trailer are living, breathing animals, and every curve or sudden brake throws off their balance. Especially for a mare traveling with her foal, one misstep can mean injury—or worse.
In the photo, you’ll see a mother horse bracing herself over her baby. She knows one sudden move could hurt her foal. So she locks her stance and stays as still as she can. But she can only do that if I’m driving smoothly. If you jump into that gap and force me to slam the brakes, she might fall. The whole trailer could tip.
I don’t believe drivers do this out of carelessness. Most just don’t know what we’re carrying—or how fragile their lives are in the back of this rig. So I’m asking kindly: next time you see a horse trailer, give it space. It’s not just metal and wheels—it’s trust, breath, and heart inside.
