Louisville SAE Baja

Louisville SAE Baja The University of Louisville Baja SAE team is a part of the Collegiate Design Series hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

The team designs, builds, and races an off-road vehicle against hundreds of other participating colleges and universities. SAE hosts three competitions a year in the U.S. in which one hundred schools compete at each competition for the top spot. Teams are judged first on their designs and overall vehicle cost, then on day two the cars hit the track for several different events to determine the veh

icle’s overall performance abilities. On the final day of the event, a four hour wheel to wheel endurance race tests the reliability of and durability of the cars on a track filled with large obstacles, jumps, and mud. The University of Louisville Baja SAE team was founded in the ‘80s, however in the late 90’s the team fell by the wayside at UofL. In 2003 the team was started back up again and since then UofL has been a strong competitor in the competitions consistently placing in the top 25 nearly every year. The bar was raised in 2012 however, when the team placed in the top 10 at both of the competitions they attended. The new tradition of top 10 finishes at each event attended was continued into 2013 with an 8th place, 5th place, and 2nd place in each of the competitions, completing the best overall year for the Louisville Baja team!

Update: I want to thank everyone how has already donated to our team, but we are still in need of fire suits and could use any amount of money you guys could give.

Over this past holiday weekend, while many of us were enjoying much needed time with friends and family, Louisville SAE Baja received the news that "Big Red" the team's trailer was stolen Saturday morning. Even though our trailer was found today; it was basically empty and broken so it could not be locked. We are working with the University and insurance company to replace the contents of the trailer, we are in desperate need on safety gear before Midnight Mayhem. Midnight Mayhem is an extremely important event to the Louisville team, and we would love the opportunity to participate in the first year we can host this event at the University of Louisville. As a team, we realize working with the insurance company may take months, but with Mayhem only 16 days way we may not have time to work with the insurance company. So we are asking for your help. The Baja community is full of people who work together and watch out for one another. So please if you have any approved safety gear, or have any leads on where to get safety gear in a pinch, please reach out to us. We may be able to get by with the few helmets we have left, but we are in desperate need of firesuits, wrist restraints, neck braces, gloves, and goggles. Thank you all for your support, and we hope to see you all at Mayhem.

Edit: We added a GoFundMe https://www.gofundme.com/f/louisville-sae-baja-safety-gear-recovery?sharetype=teams&member=2819398&rcid=r01-156756943041-c94dead9afc84a41&pc=ot_co_campmgmt_w
