Born Saul Cohen, Dean Collins grew up in New Jersey and started dancing with his sisters at the age of 14. In 1935 he was named New Yorker magazine's dancer of the year. He eventually made his way out to Los Angeles, where he choreographed dance sequences for movies such at "Let's Make Music". He and other local swing dancers developed Hollywood or smooth style Lindy Hop, a predecessor of West Coast Swing.

Wh**ey's Lindy Hoppers were a group of top dancers employed by Wh**ey who worked gigs and even made it to the movies! Appearances on the big screen included the Marx Brother's "A Day at the Races", "Hellzapoppin'", and more. These dancers could perform tight choreography for the stage as well as improvised and advanced social dancing, never forgetting their roots at the Savoy and other ballrooms.

Herbert "Wh**ey" White got his nickname from the streak of white in his hair, and was a bouncer at the Savoy in the 1930's. As Lindy Hop gained popularity, "...requests came from downtown socialites and rich folk who wanted to have Lindy Hoppers perform at their lavish parties..." and Herbert had a good eye for picking out talent at the Savoy. He employed and mentored dancers, known as "Wh**ey's Lindy Hoppers".
