MDS conditioning
If your plan going into a fight is simply to not get hit, you've already lost. And your brain will short circuit when you do get hit with the unfamiliar pain stimulus and disruption. But, if you're conditioned to pain, making the unfamiliar familiar, you remain unfazed, able to handle the situation and even gain the advantage.
