A great inaugural trip to the King Cup in Las Vegas this past weekend where the boys lifted the Cup after winning the Men's Over 35 Division.
After a tough day 1 saw them dominate play only to end the day without a win and 0-1-1 in group play frustrations began to take hold. The boys regrouped over a few beers, some food and a team-building night around the craps table to come out roaring with a 7-0 victory the next morning in the final group match.
The quarter-final match brought perhaps the toughest test of the weekend in a strong Arroyo team out of Houston, TX. The boys came out flying and Tai Doan soon had us up 1-0 after slotting home a fantastic ball over the top from Julian Santana. Añejo continued to press and the game was put of reach in the 2nd after Federico Bianchi dribbled the keeper to secure the W.
Redemption was at stake in the semifinal match vs Blue Dragons out of SoCal who gave Añejo their only L of the tourney in group play. A 2nd half PK from Rauk Palomares after a darting run from Byron Vince got us on the board and Tai Doan sealed victory shortly after with another great solo effort running through the opposing defense before slotting home. 2-0 and into the Final.
The Final matched us up against Hrazdan, also out of SoCal. A fantastic early goal put us up 1-0 as newcomer Byron Vince was again involved. His pressure at the halfway line gave him the steal and he raced onto goal before calmly slotting home near side. After a set-piece goal cancelled out the lead, Neal Yeung stole a clearance from the GK at just outside the box and put one away to restore the advantage at 2-1 heading into the break. The boys continued to press and forced the Hrazdan keeper into a number of close saves before Adam Piotrowski curled in a late freekick to make it 3-1.
Final stats: 4-1-1 over the 3 days with 17 goals for and 6 goals against, including 14 goals for and only 1 against across the final two days. Overall a great tournament for the squad and looking forward to defending the title in 2021.
