Super OG blurry pic from back in the day. I was always fishing on the Islander and that's back when John(captain) was a deckhand. When he started running the Pursuit, I started fishing on that boat every week. Sometimes twice a week. Then John asked me to create a new design for their T-shirt. This was embroidered and customized with respective names on a Dickies button down shirt and was only given to crew members(and me). I still have it and it’s almost like new.

Fun trip out today from 22nd street! First stop were the oil rigs to load up on Bonito. Weapon of choice for me was an Daiwa 40g Zakana on my Newell c229-5 and CalstarFishingRods WCDH 270. Caught 16 Bonito at that stop and….I also caught the Jackpot winning fish on the Zakana. —Skipjack tuna! That’s a first for me. Jackpot wins for me have come with Yellowtail, Calicos, Sand Bass, Barracuda or Halibut. That also means that we didn’t run into any Yellowtail. The rest of the trip was deep fishing with an 8oz torpedo and 6-8 inch sardines or small anchovies or flylining. I also caught a bunch of short Calicos, but also 4 nice keepers and a nice keeper sand bass. One of those was bottom fishing and the rest were flylined. Heavier setup for bottom fishing: Daiwa Saltist SD 30 and Proteus 7’6” H boat rod. Get out there!

On yesterday’s Yellowtail trip, I haven’t experienced something this funny on a fishing trip in a long time. Once it was announced we’d be bottom fishing with 8oz sinkers and a dropper loop, people were using 1oz torpedoes and whatever they had. 4 guys got bit instantly that were using the correct gear, but there were 2-3
Massive line tangles that involved maybe a little over 10 people on the stern. Light weights, several guys using a dropper loop setup with two hooks like they were going for rockfish, some MF was using a wire leader—-It was an ugly mess. Took over 10 minutes to get it sorted out. An older guy on the port side started complaining and yelling at everybody trying to tell people how to fish because his line also got tangled. Then after all of that was settled I see the same guy using his spinning reel upside down the entire trip LMFAO. (The pic is from the OG Hawaii 5-0) 🤣🤣🤣

No surface action at all, so I didn’t use anything. Technique of the day was a dropper loop with 8oz sinker on the bottom and we actually got 5-7” sardines in addition to those micro anchovies. Fished right in the channel, maybe an hour out of the landing. First hookup fought for around 5 minutes, then after some big drag ripping, cut me off in the reef. This was the second hookup. The next cast got a hookup and fought for around 10 minutes and it wrapped me in kelp and got away. 🥲. Still a great time out. All yellowtail were cookie cutter, around 20+.

***KCS 190 West Coast***Been so busy with work that I didn’t have time to bust out the airbrush to paint this how I normally would. In the rotation tomorrow. Hoping a yellowtail and some big calicos are nearby!

The 190 was originally designed when I was on the East Coast and I designed it to look like a sand eel. Caught plenty of Stripers from NJ to the Cape Cod Canal. Since I’ve getting bored of making all of these sand crabs, I decided to redesign the 190 to be more of a west coast edition and it’s based off an anchovy to reflect my countless hours spent on open party/ charter boats growing up catching Calicos, Sand Bass, Yellowtail, Barracuda, Tuna, Halibut and everything else that So Cal saltwater fishing has to offer.
