client asked me what I thought of their progress today. I told them it's irrelevant.
That surprised them. But I meant it. The second my opinion becomes the scoreboard, something shifts. They start working to please me, or to master my material, instead of checking in with themselves about how they're actually doing.
We're trained for this early. From the time we can barely walk, we're taught to hand our sense of how we're doing to someone else. A grade. Later a degree. Somebody out there tells us where we stand, and we believe them.
I've spent years taking that back in myself. And a lot of what I do now is help people build a place inside where their own read on their life is the one that counts.
So here's your question for today: are you headed where YOU actually want to head? And what would it take to create more of what you want?
